11/4/13 Study of virtual work - timesofmalta.com Sunday, November 3, 2013, 00:01 Study of virtual work Participants in the international training school. A four-day international training school was recently held at the University’s Valletta campus to study virtual work, which involves em ployees performing all or part of their roles from a base, physically separated from their employers. The topic is particularly relevant to Malta, as employees and professionals based on the island can use modern technologies to provide services to overseas companies. The participants studied virtual work from various perspectives, including labour studies, economics, sociology, social psychology, communications, and gender studies. The theoretical aspect was reinforced by a visit to HSBC’s UK call centre in Swatar, where they observed working practices and held a discussion with the centre’s management team. The school was attended by 25 doctoral students and early-stage researchers from Austria, Finland, the UK and the US. It was funded by the EU Cost programme, which is managed locally by the Malta Council for Science and Technology.
