Women’s Studies Course Descriptions
Summer 2013
WOMST 105 Introduction to Women’s Studies
Section ZA: Distance--V. Padilla Carroll
This course is a broad overview of Women’s Studies as a discipline—an interdisciplinary area of study
drawing from a variety of other disciplines including history, sociology, psychology, art, literature, and
philosophy among others. Topics will include history and theory of women and women’s studies, issues
concerning women, and how race, ethnicity, class, and sexuality intersect with gender. Throughout this course,
we will emphasize critical thinking and communication skills.
WOMST 300 Topic/ Vietnam Food Fashion Art
Section ZA: M/F 3:30--M. Janette & G. Craig
In this class we will explore the way Vietnam is imagined and projected through popular culture,
specifically FOOD, FASHION, and ART for tourists. Before leaving the U.S. we’ll look at cookbooks and
travel guides, two of the most common ways Americans get a glimpse of Vietnam. The majority of the course
will be a hands-on, extended chance to learn first-hand IN VIETNAM, and also learn to be self-conscious,
critical thinkers about the way that nationhood is presented and sold through food, fashion, art, and tourism.
WOMST 500 Topic/Gender in American Film
Section ZA: MTWU 9:30--V. Padilla Carroll
This course examines depictions of gender in American film. Because gender does not exist within a
vacuum, race/ethnicity, class, and sexuality will also be examined. This course will focus on how images in
film reinforce and normalize power and power relations as well as perpetuate stereotypes.
WOMST 700 Topic/ Vietnam Food Fashion Art
WOMST 784 Internship in Women’s Studies
Section ZA: By Appointment--M. Janette
(Obtain permission from Women’s Studies Program Director in 3 Leasure Hall) Women’s Studies
Internship is the opportunity to gain valuable experience in community, volunteer, activist, or political
organizations at the local, state, national, or international levels.
