C. Departmental Mission Statement
Educational Supportive Services’ mission is to provide assistance to low-income and firstgeneration college students, and students with disabilities. Services are dedicated to
enabling the target population to earn baccalaureate degrees.
D. Assessment of Student Learning Three-Year Plan
1. Student Learning Outcome(s)
a. List (or attach a list) all of the student learning outcomes for the department.
b. Identify outcomes that will be assessed in the first year of the assessment plan.
ESS program participants will be able to demonstrate:
Outcome 1: Effective use of tutoring assistance by attending sessions as scheduled,
completing course assignments, and being prepared to ask questions over
material that is not understood.
Outcome 2: Effective study skills by achieving at least satisfactory grades on course
assignments and exams.
Outcome 3: Effective critical thinking skills in applying knowledge at levels
required in pursuing a baccalaureate degree, such as interpreting
information, solving problems, and evaluating actions.

2. How will the learning outcomes be assessed? What groups will be included in the assessment?
[Briefly describe the assessment tools, measures, or forms of evidence that will be utilized to
demonstrate students’ accomplishment of the learning outcomes selected in the one-year plan.
Also indicate whether each measure is direct or indirect. If you are unsure, then write “Unsure
of measurement type”. There is an expectation that at least one of the assessment
methods/measures will be direct measures of student learning (see Measures, Rubrics, & Tools
for Assessing Student Learning Outcomes on the APR website for examples of direct and
indirect measures).
Outcome 1: Administer Educational Supportive Services Tutorial Assessment to all program
participants receiving professional and peer tutoring (indirect).
Outcome 2: Administer a Study Skills Assessment to all program participants
receiving professional and peer tutoring (direct).
Outcome 3: Academic Enrichment Program course assignments will be graded to assess the
Critical thinking skills of the ESS participants enrolled in the course (direct).
3. When will these outcomes be assessed? When and in what format will the results of the
assessment be discussed?
A. Outcome 1: Tutorial Assessment (administered each semester)

Results reviewed at the end of each semester by the Academic Services
Coordinator (ASC) and discussed with ESS staff prior to the beginning of the
next semester.
B. Outcome 2: Study Skills Assessment (administered at the beginning of the spring semester
prior to receiving tutoring and toward the end of the spring semester after receiving
tutoring).
 Initial Study Skills Assessment completed by ESS students and reviewed by the
ASC to assist students with their learning prior to beginning tutoring.
 Study Skills Assessment completed by ESS students and reviewed by the ASC to
assess their learning after beginning tutoring.
C. Outcome 3: Graded assignments (conducted spring semester)
 Assignments graded by the instructor (ASC) throughout the spring semester and
final assessment discussed by the ASC and Director.
4. What is the unit’s process for using assessment results to improve student learning?
Assessment results will be used to make modifications to current program services as needed, to
assess professional development and training needs of staff, and to assess the need for additional
resources to improve student learning for ESS participants.
