C a l i f o r n i a S ta t e U n i v e r s i t y, F r e s n o WOMEN S STUDIES ’ Learning to transform lives and communities … Women’s Studies has taught me to be conscious to what matters, to think critically and act, and to continuously progress forward. It has become a guide, a mentor in my passion to work locally and globally on social justice for all living beings. It has taught me to embrace not only my complexity but the complexity that surrounds us while getting at the root cause of injustice. It is about transforming our world into something better and it will teach you all that was left out of your school books. Geri Yang Class of 2009 I joined the department of Women’s Studies because it nourished my academic hunger and supported my engagement in current social movements through volunteering and community organizing. My experience in the department was simply self-empowering. Learning from feminist activists and philosophers of all backgrounds, I learned to take leadership in my personal life. Thus, finding work in the non-profit sector was a quick transition. Today, I am continuing my education at UCSB and aiming to achieve a PhD in Sociology and doctoral emphasis in Feminist Research. I look back on my experience in the program as one of the best times of my life. I felt like I really grew as a person, made a couple lifelong friendships and connections, and received a great foundation to build on for a lifetime of learning.
