Healthcare System Engineering for sustainable care Prof Darek Ceglarek TOPICS: (1) Simulation of sustainable healthcare systems for productivity and quality improvement (2) Modelling, Analysis and Prediction of quality failures in healthcare (3) Modelling and simulation of unneeded variation in healthcare (4) Management of Medical Technologies, including for example remote diagnostics of medical equipment (CTs, MRIs, …) DESCRIPTION: PhD opportunities are available for motivated students interested in research involving the analysis and simulations of Hospitals-of-the-Future. Projects will explore innovative ways to model complex unstructured health care service delivery processes from a systems perspective. The objective is to develop methods and algorithms to model and simulate unnecessary variation in complex systems such as hospitals and health care organizations. Students will work within a multidisciplinary team to analyse health care data using multiple analytical tools, develop data models and algorithms, and conduct simulation and analysis which will lead to optimisation of decision-making in health care settings, health care productivity and quality improvement. REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a degree in one of these fields: mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, operations research, management science, or computer science/engineering. Candidates must be self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills, an ability to work in teams and adhere to all project deadlines. The candidate is expected to develop analytical and computational skills and submit results of work for publications in academic literature. An original contribution to knowledge in the field is expected. Candidates with some knowledge/experience on any of these subjects are encouraged to apply: optimization, data mining/6-sigma, statistics, numerical programming, programming languages (C++, java, etc), experience in software (such as MATLAB, etc.), simulations (Discrete Events Simulations). Some familiarity with Java, C++, MATLAB and Visual Basic and any knowledge of simulation modelling can be very helpful.
