CPP Performance Exam
Summer 2014
The performance exam for CPP is a twenty-minute devised group performance
project using ideas and skills from two of the four units studied in CPP over this
academic year: (1) Site-Specific Performance; (2) The Body as Performance; (3)
Projection, Installation, Performance; and (4) Gamification. You will devise a piece
around the following topic: democracy. The aim of the assessment is for you to
demonstrate that you understand the devising process using the techniques you
learnt in two of the units and that you can navigate working in collaboration.
Many of you sent in your choices for the two units you would like to work on for the
devised performance. We tried to put you in groups with students who wanted to
work on at least one of those units, but that was not always possible. The choice of
units was merely for grouping purposes. Each group’s first task is to finalise the two
units they wish to explore in depth. The list of groups and supervisors is on the
website. These groups cannot be changed.
Each group has studio space for rehearsal for a total of 30 hours, plus a 4-hour tech
rehearsal (if necessary). You may rehearse outside of those times, but you will need
to find your own space. Please let Kate know if you do not need the space during
your assigned times. Millburn spaces are very busy during this period. The list of
studio times for each group is also listed on the website.
Each group will meet with its supervisor at least two times:
 6, 7 or 8 May (time determined between group and supervisor): 30 minutes
to present the pitch of what you plan to do
 12, 13 or 14 May (time determined between group and supervisor): one hour
to show the supervisor a rehearsal of the devised piece
Each group will meet with Ian at least once BEFORE the tech rehearsal to go over
technical needs. This needs to be done as soon as possible, but no later that 13 May.
It is the group’s responsibility to set up this meeting.
Technical rehearsals will be scheduled on 19 and 20 May, but the exact date, time
and place of the technical rehearsal for each group will be determined once
technical requirements are decided. Each group will have only one technical
rehearsal.
The devised performances will be presented ALL DAY, Wednesday 21 May in G53
and G55. You may perform outside the studio, but it must be somewhere on
campus, and it must be approved by the supervisor. Everyone must attend all
performances. The exact structure of the day’s performances and discussions will be
determined later. More specific details of the performance exam will be discussed in
the Summer term meeting on 24 April, 1-2pm in G53.
