COBRE Phase III: Novel Approaches for the Control of Microbial Pathogens Request for Pilot Project Applications Overview: Applications are requested for up to $55,000 for pilot projects to be funded by the COBRE grant entitled Novel Approaches for the Control of Microbial Pathogens. We plan to fund two 2-year pilot project applications. The second year of funding is contingent upon review of progress at the annual External Advisory Committee Meeting, submission of all required reporting information, and submission of at least one R01 or R21 application during the first year of funding. Letter of Intent Submission Deadline: January 2, 2015 Application Submission Deadline: February 20, 2015 Funding Dates: August 1, 2015 – July 31, 2017 Eligibility: Research must fall within the area of the central theme of the COBRE program. The research theme is centered on mechanisms inhibiting replication of pathogenic microbes, with the long-term goal of controlling infectious diseases important in human health. A. Investigators should not have received prior R01-type support from the NIH or other institutions (such as American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, NSF, DOD) or if the investigator has R01-type support, the research proposed for COBRE support should have a different focus and specific aims from the funded project. B. Eligible participants include tenured and tenure-track faculty at the PhD granting institutions in the state of Kansas. C. At least one aim of the pilot project proposal must use the existing flow cytometry core. Award Amount: We will fund two awards of up to $55,000 in direct costs during the first year of funding. Resubmission applications are welcome. Junior faculty should include a mentor and additional salary support for the mentor will be provided and should not be included in the $55,000 budget. No carryover of funds between grant years will be allowed. All applications should be written for two years of funding. Pilot Project Requirements: 1. Institutional Approval: All applications require approval by the appropriate administrative officials at the respective institution in which the faculty member is based prior to submission. A signed PHS 398 face page is acceptable to meet this requirement (Department Chair for KUMC applications and appropriate administrative official for non-KUMC applications). 4. Assurances of Compliance: Proposals selected for funding will be required to have an assurance of compliance with regulations stipulated by any appropriate institutional committees, including Institutional Animal Care and Use, Biohazards, Institutional Review Board for Human Studies, and Radiation Safety. 5. Allowable costs: Allowable costs include PI salary up to 5% effort, salary for research personnel, tuition and fees for graduate students, research supplies, technical assistance, travel when necessary to carry out the proposed research program, and publication costs. Travel to national or international meetings to present data related to the pilot project is allowable provided that the pilot project application budget justification includes the meeting information. Equipment may be allowable if required specifically for the proposed pilot project. Applicants should include a justification for equipment in the budget justification and price quote. Application reviewers will determine the necessity of the equipment for the proposed pilot project. 6. Unallowable costs include construction or maintenance of buildings, renovations, therapeutic equipment, consortium overhead costs to other institutions, secretarial and telephone services, office furniture, office equipment, office supplies, dues and memberships in scientific societies, and equipment not specifically requested in the budget justification and approved by application reviewers. 7. Additional Requirements: A. When an awardee submits subsequent grant applications, he/she is expected to acknowledge information on KUMC COBRE funding. If the subsequent grant application receives funding, the awardee must provide written notification to Elizabeth Jenkins of the type and amount of funding. At the time of funding, current KUMC COBRE funding will be re-evaluated. B. Publications resulting from research supported by the KUMC COBRE should cite COBRE funding by including the grant number P30 GM103326. C. All pilot project recipients must submit at least one R01 or R21 application to the NIH during the first year funding of the pilot project in order to be eligible for a second year of funding. . D. Pilot project recipients are required to provide information needed to complete the Annual Progress Report. Failure to provide information will result in disqualification for a second year of funding. E. Pilot project recipients are required to attend and present their research at two mandatory meetings. One will be an internal meeting in the fall with the internal advisory committee. The second meeting will also include our external advisory committee where all projects will be reviewed and evaluated for a second year of funding. This meeting will occur in the spring.
