WAR ON THE HORIZON POWERPOINT EXERCISE War on the Horizon PowerPoint exercise It was very important for commanders of medieval armies to realise that they needed to make effective use of the men under their command. However, the Scots never had enough knights or archers to make any difference in the war; they were forced to rely on their foot soldiers. At times this was a success, but often it meant that they were outclassed by the English. Look again at the PowerPoint, and read the information about the Battles of Stirling Bridge and Falkirk. Pay particular attention to the types of soldiers and how they are used in each battle. Compare how the different types of soldiers are used in the following battles: Battle of Stirling Bridge Describe the armies on both sides. How was the Scottish army able to defeat the English? What mistakes did the English commanders make? How important was the terrain in the battle? What could the English have done differently? The Battle of Falkirk Describe the armies on both sides. What did Edward I do differently to his commanders at Stirling? How did he effectively make use of all different aspects of his army?
