MEMORANDUM TO: FR: RE: DA: Frank DePaola, Chief Operating Officer Tom Tinlin, Acting Highway Administrator Ongoing Work in the MHS Tunnels May 15, 2015 We have resumed weekly tunnel maintenance and construction reports. To follow is a summary of maintenance and construction activities performed last week in the Metropolitan Highway System Tunnels. Overnight work: • • • • • • • • • MassDOT closed the Southbound tunnel set overnight so that workers could clean and repair areas of the tunnel not normally accessible while traffic is flowing. This is the second closure of the season. The first was two weeks prior, of the Northbound set. Contractors are repairing water infiltration at multiple points within the O’Neill Tunnel (both directions) and on related ramps. Recent work included slurry wall repairs and repair and replacement of fireproofing materials. There is now a new contractor, SPS New England. The scope of work is similar to the scope in previous contracts. SPS New England is also repairing fireproofing materials. Water infiltration repair work is also underway in the I-90 Connector Tunnel (both directions) and the Ted Williams Tunnel Eastbound. MassDOT closed a lane on Ramp CS-P (I-93 Southbound, Exit 23, Purchase Street) in the O’Neill Tunnel to support installation of overhead artwork on the Greenway. Workers are also repairing water infiltration in the Sumner Tunnel. The contractor who recently made water infiltration repairs in the Sumner was instructed to make additional repairs in the same area where water infiltration repair work had already occurred. Water infiltration had recurred in that segment of the tunnel. The additional repair work was done at no cost to MassDOT. A contractor working on behalf of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority is performing ongoing ceiling-related construction in the Prudential Tunnel. Remaining work is focused on punchlist items. A contractor has almost completed restoration work in the Callahan Tunnel. Only wall and ceiling washing remains. During the completion of this work, another contractor will piggyback on any closures to install a new two-way radio antenna system. A contractor working on behalf of the owner of the Prudential Center continued work on the ceiling of the Prudential Tunnel and the median area in that portion of the tunnel. This is a different section of the ceiling than what has been noted above. Recent work was concentrated on repairs to the median walls. A contractor took advantage of lane closures for the Prudential work in the paragraph above to survey bridges exiting the Eastbound Prudential Tunnel. • • • • • A contractor is removing old, unused overhead sign structures in the Ted Williams Tunnel (both directions). A contractor performed a routine inspection of portions of the I-93 Southbound Tunnel and related ramps. A contractor also performed a similar inspection on the Northbound side. A contractor is also inspecting the Eastbound and Westbound tunnel sets and related ramps. A contractor removed floating debris from a wet well in a pump station in the Ted Williams Tunnel Westbound. MassDOT workers replaced three cases of light bulbs in the Prudential Tunnel Westbound. MassDOT workers inspected and performed routine maintenance on the crosspassage doors in the Prudential Tunnel (both directions).
