2010-09-08 Aim (official version) After the course the student should be able to: – Give examples of the use of computer technology. – Give a presentation where a technical application is explained. – Write technical reports with correct use of sources. – Work together with other students towards a goal that the group itself has specified. The two courses Aim (my version) The students should be able to explain to their relatives what they are studying, not just say that it’s ”something with computers”. The students should know why (and if) they want to spend several years following their particular education program. Take them to a suitable room (that you book). If you are not available, send someone else or e-mail me a suitable time and place during Friday when you can meet your group. Start of project work Version 1 of the report The students should give you a signed copy of their group contract at your second meeting (not IT1) There are one reserved time slot per week in their schedule (called PR) where they can work with the project or have meetings. Of course they have to work more, but at least that is booked. Keep track of their work. Make sure that they actually start to do something really soon. If the group does not work, try to solve it by going back to the group contract. If it doesn’t work, refer the group to me. Say something about yourself and what you do Make the students say something about themseleves, so you get to know them Explain what the project is about, and if there are practical things they need to know (e.g. access to equipment) Book a new meeting Check attendance and have the students e-mail me, giving a list of students that were not there Initiate a discussion regarding the group contract (not if you have a group from IT1) Deadline for version 1 of the report is Friday 15 October (last day of the study period). This is a big change from last year! The first version should be an outline that doesn’t have to have any real text. It should however contain headers and notes about what to write in each section. Give the students feedback on the structure of their document, pointing out e.g. things they need to add or explain better. 2 Version 2 of the report Deadline for version 2 of the report is Wednesday 3 November. This version should contain a more or less finished report with no place holders. Give the students feedback on the contents and structure, not necessarily language and layout. You also might want to check out how they handle references. Be prepared to give the students fast feedback, since they have a tight deadine for version 3! Finishing the project Sometime later in the course, e.g. in October, you have to follow up the group contract. Discuss with the students if the group contract has worked or not, and what they can learn for their next project. You have to report to me which students have passed the project, i.e. they should have contributed to the project work and the report. Version 3 of the report Deadline for version 3 of the report is Monday 8 November. This version should be sent to you, for verification that they have corrected your remarks. If they have not, they have to make yet another version. It should also be sent to the communcation teachers for feedback on language etc. Final conference Thursday 2 December the groups will present their projects for the rest of the students in a sort of mini conference. There will be parallel presentations, and it would be good if some advisors can participate as session chairpersons. 3
