Method & Process for
Developing Draft Alternatives
The Path Design Has Taken
Drafting the Alternatives
The Designer General’s WARNING:
The tools we use today for designing and drawing,
principally AutoCAD and other software programs,
make the process faster, more efficient and make
coordination between drawings easier.
There is an unfortunate side effect of AutoCAD
which is the hard-line style makes all drawings
look more finished, more thought out than they
may actually be.
This often leads people to incorrectly conclude that
concepts and ideas shown at the early stages of a
design process are finished designs.
Let us assure you: this is not the case.

Goal for Break Out Groups
Define the Best Elements for the Final Alternatives
Bridge – Determine Your
Preference
1.
2.
3.
Split Versus Single Bridge – why
and what opportunity does it
create?
Alignment – over surface roadway
or adjacent to surface roadway –
benefits of those locations?
Use of Bridge – bike lane and
sidewalk Versus multi-use pathway
Versus no sidewalk and bike lane
- why is it important if provided at
grade?
At-Grade – Determine Your
Preference
1. Median Width – Wide Versus
Narrrow – why and how should
it be used?
2. Critical Access points to
Maintain – why and how?
3. Community Spaces – Where to
locate and how to activate?
