Guide to the Index to Legal Periodicals and Books
This database provides a good starting point to find highly relevant articles published in a range of
countries. It supplements the Abstracted Articles content in WestlawUK and is especially useful as a
starting point for finding US law journal articles. It may also direct you to articles which are available in
print only in the Library.
Action: log on to the Index to Legal Periodicals and Books from the Library’s list of databases.
Note the options to limit your search, especially by date range. You can also specify that you only want to
see Scholarly (peer reviewed) journals.
Action: enter the phrase “separation of powers” (in double quotation marks) in the first text box, and
judges in the second box. (You can also connect terms in one box using AND, OR or NOT). Click
Search:
Note the links to PDF Full text below some of the results, and options to refine the search on the left.
Action: tick “Scholarly (peer reviewed) journals”, on the left:
Action: click Update:
The original set of results has now been reduced.
What if there is no full text? Scroll to find an article entitled “Ambition Counteracting Ambition: Separation
of Powers in Supreme Court Appointments”, published in the Journal of Supreme Court History, 2012, Vol.
37 Issue 2, p134-147.

This will take you to the article in another database; locate the link to the article there to read it in full. If
WebBridge fails you can also check Encore for the journal title, in this case the Journal of Supreme Court
History.
If this database does not provide enough articles, you are advised to search Westlaw, Lexis and other
collections as well, but it is often a very good starting point to research a fairly wide topic.
