Achievement Pathway: Eilidh Eilidh has complex additional support needs and finds all curricular areas very challenging. Throughout her school career she has benefited from intensive support from school staff, a range of partners and her parents, and as a result she has made some progress in her BGE at first level. As Eilidh moved towards the end of her third year, her growing confidence meant that she was able to make a positive contribution to discussions about her future pathway. She had a good understanding of her strengths and areas of greatest challenge and was able to articulate what she felt would be of benefit to prepare her for an independent life in the future. Eilidh particularly enjoyed all types of sport-related activities, music, dance and cooking. She was a member of the school athletics team, school musical theatre group and represented the school at swimming. Eilidh was chosen by her peers to represent her group on the pupil council – she displayed excellent communication skills by listening to the views of her peer group and then articulating these to the pupil council. One of the ideas taken forward was for the pupil council to lead fund-raising activities in order to develop a ‘cottage garden’ in the school grounds where they planned to grow and sell herbs and vegetables. In the senior phase of her education, Eilidh embarked on a clear progression route she agreed supported by school staff, partners and her parents. Building on her achievements in her BGE and reflecting her interests and aspirations for the future Eilidh undertook programmes of learning covering skills in personal development, independent living skills, food preparation and physical education at N1 level. In S6, Eilidh successfully secured a place on a transition course delivered by the local College. This prepared her well for a full-time Lifeskills course at College. This course included a weekly work placement at a local children’s soft play centre where she was able to experience a wide range of vocational opportunities including reception duties, play assistant, chef duties and waitressing. Outside of school, Eilidh was an active member of her local swimming club and represented the club at local and national levels. She had recently joined a musical theatre group and although not quite ready for a solo performance, she enthusiastically participated in all group singing and dance activities. Eilidh regularly attended a youth group where she was able to participate in a wide range of activities and benefit from opportunities to continue to develop her mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing through the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Eilidh had already planned most of the activities she would undertake in order to achieve her bronze award – these included volunteering as a lifeguard at the local leisure centre, choreographing and leading rehearsals for ‘street dance’ routines to be included in the youth group’s annual concert and learning to SCUBA dive. She was interested in participating in a Raleigh International project for her expedition/residential project but this was still in the early stages of planning. Through active participation in a wide range of activities both in school and outside, Eilidh had numerous opportunities to extend her learning and skills.
