Instructional Planning Yearly Update Date ___December 4th, 2012___ Department ____Geology / Oceanography / Environmental Science Division _____NAS__________ Goals and Recommendations from Program Plan List the top five Goals and Recommendations from the last Program Plan and indicate whether they have been met? Goals / Recommendations from six-year plan In progress Goal Met Comments (identify source of funding) 1) Purchase a new computer for room 705B, the shared Oceanography / Geology faculty office. 2) Increase the Student Assistant II account by approximately 12% from $4,420 to $4,950. Cost: $530 per year (ongoing) 3) Increase the Oceanography supplies account by ~32% from $1,556 to $2,054. Yes, general fund This is an enormous upgrade for us as several faculty members use this computer. The Students Assistant ongoing budget for all Oceanography, Geology and Environmental Science courses has been increased to $5,091. The Oceanography Supply Account is currently at $1,826, up ~17%. 4) Provide adjunct instructor Wayne Bloechl 3 teaching units to develop Geology 25, Geology of National Parks in a distance learning format. Yes, NAS Division funds Partially, Division funds Yes, Instructional Development Grant funds Geology 25 was taught in the fall of 2009, 2010 and 2011 in a Distance Learning format. In the Fall of 2012, it was taught in a live format and enrollment significantly increased. This course enables us to offer curriculum that satisfies the demands of the community as well as prepare students for transfer and professional careers Yes, Division Environmental Science 10L was successfully taught for the funds first time in the spring of 2010, and again in the spring of 2011 and 2012. Instructions in the schedule of classes about required field trips during lab time were a big improvement for the spring of 2011. The lab will be transferable to both UC and California State University. 5) Change ES 10 so that there is a possibility for students to take a lab. Offer ES 10 along with ES 10L and make it possible for students to have the option to take ES 10 with a lab. New Goals and Recommendations List any new goals and recommendations identified by the department Goal/Recommendation Cost Explanation/Evidence of Need Consider offering ES 10L in the fall semesters 2.4 teaching units The ES 10 labs close immediately. This suggests there is high demand for students looking to satisfy a lab general education requirement. If not every thing was completed, explain why. We begin Program Planning in the spring of 2013. The students were surveyed in the fall of 2012. We have completed all but one Student Learning Outcome Assessments for our entire program. The reaming one will be completed in the spring of 2013. The last two Departmental Assessment Analysis Forms were completed in the fall of 2012. Fill out the Assessment Results section below. SLO Assessment Results: List SLO assessments, dialogues, and priorities identified as a result of your assessment below. Attach Departmental Assessment Analysis Forms completed in the last two semesters. Core Competency, Course SLO, or CTE Program SLO Assessed. Example: all course SLOs for English 1A, 1B and 2 Environmental Science 10L SLO #1 Assessment: Analyze and diagnose various abiotic and biotic components of ecosystems. Date of meeting where analysis / dialogue took place. Example: Department Meeting 8/27/10 August 31st, 2012 Priorities identified for program as a result of assessment. Example: Develop strategies for teaching research and documentation skills; share rubrics for research papers; provide more instructional support outside of class. o State goals or objectives of assignment/activity more explicitly o Revise content of assignment/activities o Revise activities leading up to and/or supporting assignment/activities o Increase in-class discussions and activities o Increase guidance for students as they work on assignments Have students study the field equipment (instruments, meters, chemicals etc.) in the lab before they actually go out in the field and use the instruments. Spend more time in lab demonstrating how to build charts using the software Excel. Spend more time in lab discussing the various hypothesizes experiments and how to interpret the results.
