Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin (FB
20-8, 20-10) or by at least two months
prior to the sponsor deadline if you wish
to submit to a limited submission program. Currently posted Internal Deadlines: http://www.k-state.edu/research/

GENERAL
20-1 Development of an Integrated
Mathematical Model for Comparative
Characterization of Complex Molecules
(U01) (NIH)
The goal of this project is to develop a
mathematical algorithm or model to integrate in vitro chemical and biological characterization data to determine the degree
of sufficiency of in vitro chemical and biological characterization assays, with
respect to demonstrating similarity or
sameness of the follow-on or generic version of macromolecules or complex drug
substances to their reference products. The
integrated mathematical and analytical
approach developed in this project may
help to determine the extent to which the
preclinical and/or clinical studies will be
needed for generic or follow-on version of
drug products containing these complex
molecules. RFA-FD-14-082 (NIHG 5/23/

20-2 Air, Climate and Energy (ACE)
Centers: Science Supporting Solutions
(EPA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to
Achieve Results (STAR) program, is
seeking applications for Air, Climate and
Energy (ACE) Centers. EPA is interested
in supporting research on the development of sound science to systematically
inform policy makers at the state and
local levels regarding the development of
innovative approaches to enable effective
implementation of air pollution control
strategies to achieve the greatest public
health benefits by reducing exposure to
harmful air pollution. Priority research
areas include: 1) enhancing understanding of spatial and temporal differences in
individual pollutants and pollutant mixtures within and across different areas
(including urban areas, or between urban,
suburban, and rural areas) or geographic
regions; 2) identifying and improving the
characterization of the most important
factors contributing to regional or cityto-city differences or similarities in air
pollution and health effects beyond
topography and meteorology; 3) improving the ability to understand and project
how these contributing factors and differences may change over the next one to
several decades; and 4) advancing scientific knowledge and tools needed to
develop robust strategies for air pollution
control to improve public and environmental health under a variety of conditions, including consideration of
approaches for addressing climate
change preparedness. EPA-G2014STAR-J1 (GG 5/15/14)

20-4 New Scholar Program (TEF)
The New Scholars Program from the
Elsevier Foundation supports projects to
help early- to mid-career women scientists balance family responsibilities with
demanding academic careers. New Scholars seeks to actively address the attrition
rate of talented women scientists caused
by work-life balance issues. The Foundation provides one, two and three year
grants to STEM institutions and organizations actively working towards a more
equitable academia by: Encouraging networking and collaborations among institutions and/or across STEM disciplines in
ways that support the challenges of faculty and staff with family responsibilities.
Developing and implement strategies for
advocacy and policy development to
advance knowledge, awareness, and
application of programs to retain, recruit
and develop women in science. Enabling
scientists to attend conferences, meetings,
workshops and symposia that are critical
to the development of a career in science
by helping them with child care and other
family responsibilities when attending
scientific gatherings.

higher education (IHEs) accountable for
preparing highly qualified teachers; and
recruiting effective individuals, including
minorities and individuals from other
occupations, into the teaching force. The
TQP Grant Program supports partnerships
among IHEs, high-need local educational
agencies, and high-need schools served
by such LEAs or high-need early childhood education (ECE) programs. These
partnerships must implement a) teacher
preparation programs at the pre-baccalaureate or “fifth-year” level that include
specific reforms in IHEs’ existing teacher
preparation programs; b) teacher residency programs for individuals with
strong academic or professional backgrounds but without teaching experience;
or c) both. In this competition, we are
especially interested in supporting partnership programs that prepare teachers to
teach subjects in science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

20-10 Collections in Support of
Biological Research (CSBR) (NSF)
The Collections in Support of Biological
Research (CSBR) Program provides
funds: 1) for improvements to secure,
improve, and organize collections that are
significant to the NSF BIO-funded
research community; 2) to secure collections-related data for sustained, accurate,
and efficient accessibility of the collection to the biological research community; and 3) to transfer collection
ownership responsibilities. The CSBR
program provides for enhancements that
secure and improve existing collections,
result in accessible digitized specimenrelated data, and develop better methods
for specimen curation and collection management. Requests should demonstrate a
clear and urgent need to secure the collection, and the proposed activities should
address that need. Biological collections
supported include established living
stock/culture collections, vouchered nonliving natural history collections, and
jointly-curated ancillary collections such
as preserved tissues and DNA libraries. In
a single round of the CSBR competition,
only one proposal may be submitted from
any individual collection within an organization. One organization may not submit more than three proposals to any one
CSBR competition. NSF 14-564
