PUBLIC COMMENTS
Sarah Emmert, VP Public Relations, Honor Society:
Proposed an AGS/ASCC Event; opportunity for the senate and the honor society
to interact. Possible dates? Mil—asked Sarah if she would be willing to allow
other clubs to participate. Benjamin—asked senators if they would be interested
in dodgeball or baseball for the event; interested in physical contact sports.
Duval, Bhatki Yogi Club:
Delighted to be the senate’s caterer during Welcome Week. Spoke about his
club’s difficulty to reach out to the student body. “This was an effective way to get
access to a lot of people at a specific time. If this were to go on in the future—
would help with the vitality of the campus.” Proposed the start of a sustainable
collaboration with the senate. Weekly lunch and speaker forum. Open mic—
possibility for constant pulse of culture.
Lupe Ortiz:
Supported Santos for the Watsonville Representative position. Spoke about
Cesar Chavez Day on March 31st. Watsonville doesn’t know much about the
senate. Welcome Week in Watsonville? Anthony—students in Watsonville want
to be considered as students of Cabrillo. Desire a talent show. Rebeca—it’s
important to understand choice of words—SVC and Watsonville are not satellite
campuses, they are campuses. Santos—unveiled an idea for a 3 level parking lot
in Watsonville. Section 8—students want independence. Who has 4 years? Is
there something that we could pose? For students that are striving and trying to
do something with their lives. The students who are trying to do something could
get on section 8. We could all get together and make a proposition. Marko—first
step would be to make a resolution.

PRESIDENT MARKO’S REPORT
 We don’t take perks. Looks bad politically. We can’t grant ourselves
things that regular students don’t have.
 Sen. Andreas resigned.
 Thank you letters from teachers that received instructional grants.
 A&R deals a lot with student complaints. Wants to show appreciation for
their dealings with students. Proud to say that Esperanza Nee supports
the SAC card.
V.
APPOINTMENT OF NEW, QUALIFYING SENATE MEMBERS
Noah—started to integrate with senate; enjoyable experience so far. Helping
students with welcome week, fulfilling. Anthony—what do you plan to do for
senate? Noah—promote the benefits of the SAC card. (16/0)
Gary—student since 2001. Taken lots of classes. Gotten involved with AGS.
Been so long, wants to give something back to the school. Student senate at Cal
State Hayward and high school. (16/0)
Santos—so that we can work together on difficult issues. Make a difference. Goal
is to become a congressman or a politician. Trying to make the best of what
everything is. (16/0)
Noah, Gary and Santos were sworn in by President Marko.
VI.
INFO/ACTION
1. Pres. Marko—Business Cards for new senators. $500 from Programs.
(Steven/Anthony) 16/0 Approved
2. Pres. Marko—Aquarium for SAC East…again, but for less. $600 from
Student Center.
Santos—friend has an aquarium for sale.
Sesario—it’s like with any project, the sustainability of it is most important.
Decorating and enhancing the environment is important. Sustainability is the
question? Previous senate purchased a fish tank. $300 would purchase a
quality tank.
Steven—takes a lot of work to take care of a fish tank. Unnecessary for this
room.
Marko—used to running large scale aquariums. They are used to relax
people.
Eric—given that the aquarium is coming from the student center fee. Cost
isn’t a problem. The question is whether the tank is ethical? Risk worth
taking?
Jon—it’s not about the money, do we trust future generation of senators?
Nice addition to the building.
Mil—was for it in the beginning. What if we go on a long vocation. Who’s
going to tank care of the tank during to breaks.
Elowyn—honestly don’t think the fish would be in any danger.
Sesario—current aquariums are pretty clean. Doesn’t mind maintenance.
Would need from future senates. 1-2 people committing to their Saturday
mornings to cleaning tank.
Sophie—no fish we get now will outlast me.
(Sophie/Nicola) 9/7 Approved
3. Pres. Marko—$6350. From Student Center for copier.
Copier desperately needed for student affairs office. Model requested
includes a fax and a scanner. 5-year life expectancy. Quote from
maintenance and operations. Rebeca—we are using student senate funds for
a copier/scanner/fax machine that student senators can use? Gabe—who’s
going to maintain it? Gabe—it has a warranty. Ryan—there are companies
that specialize in refilling ink cartridges. Sesario—are we sure that it prints
back to back. Ryan—Does it have optical character recognition. Onya—
service is printing out a copy of class schedule. Ink printer inadequate for that
service. Ryan—what will become of the color copier? We can’t afford ink.
Onya—technician suggested using an HP cartridge—4 cartridges for over
$4000. Elowyn—is anyone actually against this? Sesario—Brown act
requires that when taking action, constituents are informed 72 hours in
advance. Students come and need a fax. We are not going to need to be in
the business of faxing. It’s about school. It’s about documents that relate to
success in their college success.
(Sophie/Nicola) 16/0 Approved
4. Pres. Marko—$500 for luncheon for A&R and SS. From Programs.
Anthony—Scott is a machine at Scotts Valley. How will we schedule this?
Sesario—everytime there’s a project, the impact adds to Admissions and
Record’s stress. Benefits-check off added an entirely new level of stress. Late
registration last Saturday—SAC program sold to students. Celeste offered to
take photos herself. She has been incredibly friendly with an incredibly
friendly positive attitude. Offered to meet with staff. Gesture of thanks.
(Benjamin/Sophia) 16/0 Approved

INFORMATION
1. Treas. Richard—Budget #1—augmentation for Spring semester 2008.
Met with Violete Reese from Business Office to determine budget. Would like
to schedule a meeting for everyone to come to. Would like for everyone to
understand how much money is, where it goes.
Dropping $50,000 into programs.
Sesario—currently $25,000 programs, 10,000 spent, unknown amount of
purchase requisitions remaining.
2. Treas. Richard—Budget #2—proposal for budget 2008-2009.
 March 13th, final proposal due.
 Rachel Spencer—newly admitted Cabrillo College students would
receive welcome workshops,
 Senators: more money to scholarships.
 Marko—money given to Cabrillo Foundation for endowment.
 Student Senate Scholarship
 Sesario—it’s not how many activities are done a year—it’s that more
multicultural activities should be happening. What else is out there?
Come with your proposal, promote your culture? Maybe we should
have an account that covers sick and dying.
3. Sen. Katie—discussion of gifts for retiring/sick/dying faculty, staff and
Administrators.
Sesario—WES—women for education success—extreme need cases are
taken care of. People have been identified across the campus—received
access to funds of $200. We could establish something similar to WES.
Lupe—student at one point—had to prove was a student. How much was it
important?
Ben—speaking with foundation to create a separate account for students?
Sesario—the foundation could start a foundation for extreme need.
4. ICC Chair—Mil—Seahawk Zine.
Internal problem at voice. New format at voice—only 4 pages per issue/1
story per page. Prediction that the voice will disintegrate. Wants: Completely
free press. A student newspaper. Katie—completely awesome idea.
Cooperative work experience education. Marko asked about sustainability.
Marko—we could try this out for a year. Show the dean that the students can
write their own newspapers. Already spoken with dean and adviser. Another
way to show school that this is possible. Richard—working within the system
to improve what’s there. Mil—not saying that the voice should fall apart.
Santos—worth taking a chance. Sophia—possibly starting a journalism club.
Marko--$8,000, $1,000 per issue. 70-80% of content submitted through
students. Sesario—club should be formed and chartered before funding
newspaper.
5. Sen. Sophie—Sweatshirts.
Marko—something more professional than a t-shirt.
Katie—how much would sweatshirts cost?
6. Sen. Noah—Computer.
Ryan, Marko, and Noah agree that anything that requires design. Important to
have the software for: graphic design, web design, etc. Gary—ensure that the
model card is not proprietary and added memory isn’t too expensive. Noah—
suggested 3-year warranty.
