Context For Learning:
Third/Fourth Level
This is a very comprehensive website which covers everything from the reasons why climate change
is happening with evidence of what is happening to the world. It also highlights a number of impacts
of climate change around the world, including examples from Scotland, across the UK and around
the rest of the world. There are a number of different predictions made about how climate change
will affect the world in the future. As well as this it discusses ways in which climate change is being
tackled by governments around the world as well as analysing the ways in which green technology
can help reduce the impacts of global warming. There is an excellent ‘Take Action’ section to the
website which would give pupils ideas on what individuals can do a local level as well as a global
level. It also includes a number of ways in which individuals can help save energy, reduce carbon
footprints and give them ideas on living a more sustainable lifestyle. This website also tackles the
controversy surrounding climate change and the level to which human activity influences this
change, allowing for critical thinking by the learners.
Learning & Teaching Approaches:
This could be used in a number of different ways in class. Each section could be used as a starter for
learning or discussion as well as providing links for additional information for any learners who wish
to look into any subject in more detail. Alternatively it can be used as a whole for project based
learning by either individuals or groups.
There are also a number of different links for images, films, books and web content with additional
information on climate change.
Weather and Climate Change

SOC 2-08a
Contexts for Learning:
Another comprehensive website this time aimed more towards 2nd level due to less sophisticated
language and the addition of more images and videos. This site makes the link between weather and
climate. It contains essential background information about climate change as well as easy access to
topical news and resources. The videos it contains can be used directly with the learners. Again it has
sections on energy use and where it comes from as well as information on renewable energies and
saving energy but in less detail that “Exploring Climate Change”. For renewable energies it provides a
good synopsis of what it is, where it is used in Scotland and the benefits of its use. Additional links
are also given to direct learners to other websites with more detailed information. This website also
covers the impact of climate change in Scotland and around the world. It discusses ways in which
climate change can be reduced and also ways in which communities are having to adapt due to a
significant change in climate.
Again there a number of different resources which can be accessed from here including videos,
images and news updates.
An excellent aspect of this website is that it provides a
number of ‘reflective questions’ which can be used to develop thinking skills, stimulate critical
thinking and classroom discussion. It also allows learners the opportunity to focus their study
beyond the classroom.

Context For Learning:
This set of resources from Oxfam focus on the impact that climate change has on the world’s poor,
especially women, and helps learners to appreciate a variety of ways in which the issue can be
managed.
Learning & Teaching Approaches:
There are two videos which can be used either as starters for discussion or as resources to teach
learners about the role climate change has on the poor. There are also a number of teacher packs,
including case studies, which can be printed and used as they are. These include active learning
resources such as decision making exercises and mysteries.
The human aspect of climate change is often neglected especially in the developing world and these
sets of resources provide learners with the opportunity to develop their thinking beyond the UK and
the developed world whilst also appreciating the real life impact that climate change is having on a
global scale.

Context For Learning:
This is an excellent resource for a number of reasons. Firstly it allows a different aspect of climate
change to be studied depending on the month of the year which allows for almost continuous study
of the topic. Each monthly article explains how climate change is affecting nature in Scotland e.g.
plant life, rising sea levels, flooding, drought, renewable energy etc. The content is of sufficient detail
that it allows for independent or project based study based around a monthly topic.
The introduction highlights the impact of climate change and the Scottish Natural Heritage action
plan on the topic. This is aimed at local study of climate change.

This free guide examines the impact of climate change in Scotland. It is a series of lesson activities
which examine all aspects of climate change from both natural and human causes of climate change
to the effects on Scotland and then solutions such as renewable energies.
Learning & Teaching Approaches:
This pack has both information and questions which can be used as full lessons. To do this would be
very traditional, however, but can be used as the basis for planning interdisciplinary learning tasks as
these topics also cover various areas within the Science Curriculum.
The first few lesson ideas give some excellent examples on teaching about the naturally changing
aspects of the climate and why there is some controversy as to the human influence on climate
change.

Context For Learning:
These three resources are all used to help aid planning of tasks which aim to promote the
importance of global citizenship within a school. Citizenship and enterprise is also encouraged.
The first resource (e-Twinning) involves nursery age children twinned with a school abroad. As well
as providing the possibility for ICT to be used, this encourages an enterprising attitude to learning
about their own culture by having to ‘teach’ others about it. The learners also learn directly about
another culture, their traditions, food and beliefs. Interestingly, there is also the potential to pick up
some basic language skills if the link school is not English speaking.
Bugesara Project is a showcase highlighting the work that fundraising can do to help people in the
developing world. In this case, fundraising from a number of Angus schools helped to build four
houses and the sinking of a well to provide clean and fresh water to the region. Both pupils and
teachers travelled to Rwanda and were able to bring their experiences back to Scotland to pass on to
other pupils. There is a lasting legacy in Rwanda as a result of real work and effort by Scottish pupils
on a whole school level and with joint school collaborations. It also allowed pupil to see where their
efforts and money were going and the part they played in improving people’s lives in another
country.
International Links develop active pupil participation highlights Glenisla Primary School’s
involvement in the Comenius project which forges links with a number of schools and has allowed an
international dimension, and global citizenship in particular, to be given a whole school focus and
built in to the everyday lives of learners and teachers. The regular visits and activities have engaged
pupils in the subject, increasing their motivation and increasing relevance to the subject matter. The
activities were both classroom and non-classroom based.
These resources show other schools how they can implement global citizenship across the entire
school and the benefits it provides to the pupils.
