GO GREEN Ready, Set, Recycle! What is Recycling? Recycling is the process of transforming used materials, such as plastic or paper, into new products. The Zoo uses products made from recycled materials, including benches, trash cans, carpet, and decking. How is it Green? Recycling products such as paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass reduces: • the waste of potentially usable materials • the need for raw materials • energy usage for obtaining those raw materials and for maintaining landfills • air pollution by reducing the use of incinerators at landfills • water pollution that stems from landfills How Does it Work? Cincinnati operates a single stream recycling system. Homeowners place all recyclable materials into the same bin without having to sort them. Trucks collect and transport the materials to a Rumpke Recycling Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Here, the recyclables are unloaded onto the tipping floor. Conveyor belts carry the recyclables through a sorting station where they are separated by type. Items are baled and shipped to their respective markets. Manufacturers make new products from the materials, including paper, packaging, insulation, carpeting, polyester clothing, and more. Why Would I Recycle? Recycling is good for the planet. It reduces the release of greenhouse gases, conserves energy, protects trees, saves natural resources, curbs landfill growth, and creates jobs. Where Can I Recycle?
