Excellence in encouraging skills in money management, supporting learner
retention and contributing to the community
“Shake Your Piggy”
A group of HND Events Management students competed in a challenge to influence
a community and inform fellow students about money management. Some students,
it is recognised, need further support to manage their money in order to continue
their course.
Having identified some of the key budgeting issues for learners and the community,
the group wanted to make people aware of the different ways to borrow money. In
addition, they wanted to show that it is not always essential to buy branded products.
As partners, they involved a local credit union and the Citizens Advices Bureau
to promote the event and to sustain the project the students created a Facebook
page and built an app. which links to CAB and the credit union. They achieved
publicity in local and national press.
An interactive information stand was set up at Cumbernauld shopping centre.
The objectives were:
 to have several people sign up to a credit union and become aware of that
service; and
 to let people compare supermarket products with branded products,
highlighting simple ways to save money.
They had linked up with drama students from the College who performed throughout
the day and make shoppers stop and look at the activity and displays.
Through this project, the team themselves gained and developed IT skills,
communication, working with others, organising budgets, working within a team,
confidence building and negotiating It also allowed the students to work within a
community and engage with external agencies.
The activity involved a large number of learners in investigating and reviewing
different aspects of budgeting and managing money, and helped developed
resources to encourage other learners and members of the community to learn more
about their options.
The College will repeat this event inside the college as well as in the community
