ITUITU-T Workshop Video and Image Coding and Applications (VICA) Abstract Geneva, 22 – 23 July 2005 Speaker: Thomas Wiegand Assoc. Rapporteur ITU-T Q.6/16; HHI/ Germany Session: 6: Future trends in VICA Title of Presentation: New techniques for improved video coding New ideas for improved rate-distortion efficiency of video coding beyond H.264/MPEG4-AVC are presented. The first approach is an improvement of H.264/MPEG4-AVC encoding that optimizes multiple pictures simultaneously. Here, significantly more computation is utilized at the encoder. The second approach achieves improvements at the cost of increasing the computational load at the decoder. It is based on video analysis at the encoder and decoder-based synthesis exploiting the fact that details in highly textured areas are often ignored by the viewer. Finally, another approach is presented that assumes the semantic knowledge of a video scene being summarized at encoder and decoder in a computer graphic model that is animated to aid video coding.
