Tree Dendrology Series WSFNR10-2 January 2010 Native Tree Families & Species of Georgia by Dr. Kim D. Coder, Professor of Tree Biology, Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources, University of Georgia Native trees are a biological heritage adding value, comfort, and beauty to life. Native trees have witnessed ice ages, many cultures come and go, and many great landscape changes. They have provided medicine, food, fiber, shelter, recreation and aesthetic values for humans, animals, and other plants. Native trees are wonderfully adapted to a local area’s climate, soils, pests and other plants. A native tree can be found to fit almost every planting or landscape situation. Listed below are native trees of our area. A tree is considered native in Georgia if it was not originally brought here by people, it is found growing and reproducing naturally in the landscape, and its gene sets developed and succeeded under Georgia environmental conditions before human dominance of the land. The trees listed as native here are a part of the natural and human developed landscapes of Georgia over the last two centuries. A few trees listed are naturalized. Naturalized trees grow and successfully reproduce in the landscape after having escaped from human plantings and cultivation. Here aggressive exotic species are not included as naturalized and are considered invasive. Native tree inclusion on this list is based upon three primary sources: USDA Forest Service map publications; University of Georgia herbarium holdings; and, personal knowledge of the author. The first column lists tree family scientific names. Trees are categorized easily and share many features with family members. The second column lists each tree’s genus and species scientific name. The third column lists the most commonly used name for each tree. Several tree species can share the same common name but each will have its own scientific name. Table 1 lists native tree species of Georgia alphabetically by family. Table 2 lists native tree species of Georgia alphabetically by genus and species scientific name. In compliance with federal law, including the provisions of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the University of Georgia does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, color, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, or military service in its administration of educational policies, programs, or activities; its admissions policies; scholarship and loan programs; athletic or other University-administered programs; or employment. In addition, the University does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation consistent with the University non-discrimination policy.
