Trees are most often identified by their leaves, so a leaf collection is an excellent way to learn about trees adapting to our biome. Trees have always been very important to people in Texas. The pecan tree is the state tree of Texas. “Nueces” is the Spanish word for pecan. A major river in Texas is also called the “Nueces” because of the magnificent pecan trees found in its river bottom. As in the past, our trees furnish food, building materials, chemicals, heat, shade, beauty, erosion control, and wildlife food and habitat. All trees, especially desirable species, increase the value of property. Be prepared to pay a lot of money if you destroy another man’s tree. Many trees are valued in excess of $100 per inch of trunk diameter. If this seems impossible, consider; the cost of removing the destroyed tree, finding another tree of the dame species and size, purchasing the new tree, digging up the new tree, replanting the new tree, and getting it to live. Your leaf collection will have 30 leaves from our list and 15 from trees you find out in the environment. Use your resources, such as neighbors, grandparents, friends and other family members. An old magazine or book is an excellent way to protect and identify leaves while collecting. Simply write the common name, date, and location (address) of the tree on the pages the leaf is between. This magazine/book can be pressed with some type of weight to straighten out the leaves. When dry, the leaves can be transferred to paper. In your collection, each leaf will be dried, pressed, and then mounted with transparent tape to separate sheets of paper.
