Phrase Review
Quick Reference:
1. Prepositional phrases: Begins with a preposition and ends with the object of a
preposition. The entire phrase acts as an adjective or an adverb.
Example: to the store, under the bench, in addition to the homework
Tips: to + noun = preposition, memorize the list of prepositions
2. Infinite phrases: a verb used as an adjective, noun, or an adverb
Example: To ride horses is to know the feeling of true freedom.
Tips: To + verb
3. Gerund phrases: a verb used as a noun
Example: Playing soccer is my favorite thing to do
Tips: Usually the subject or the object of the sentence, only ends in -ing
4. Participial phrases: a verb used as an adjective that describes a noun
Example: grilled salmon, steaming rice, fried wontons
Tips: the first word of the phrase usually ends with –ing, -d, or –ed(en). At the beginning
of a sentence followed by a comma
5. Appositive phrases: noun or pronoun that renames a noun/pronoun
Example: The Millers live in Mockingbird Lane, a wide street lined with oak trees.
Tips: usually begins with an article (a, an, the) or it begins with a noun or pronoun.
Usually non-essential and enclosed in commas
