∆ INTRODUCTION: WHY ARE YOU HERE? As the students are assembled for the first time, the presenter should establish a positive “climate” in the following ways: • Introduce yourself offer a brief background of experiences and credentials • Encourage students to introduce themselves and share a bit of information about themselves • Establish basic ground rules for questions and responses Provide an overview of the ACT Now experience. The words “post secondary” and “college” are used interchangeably. Script: Welcome to the ACT Now (Achieving College Transitions Now) experience. This experience is designed to give information about the transition from high school to a post-secondary education for students with disabilities. By completing this experience you will be better prepared to meet the challenges of transitioning from high school to college and will have a greater likelihood of success when you do. You will be encouraged to learn about your disability and reflect about yourselves as learners, communicators, goal setters and future college students. The presenter should: • Distribute project materials • Explain the schedule • Introduce the topics that will be covered within the ACT Now experience: − Planning for the transition to college − Understanding your disability − Understanding your strengths and weaknesses − Advocating for yourself − Communicating effectively with college staff − Accessing disability services − Disclosing your disability − Providing appropriate documentation − Using reasonable accommodations
