A Flawed Peace
Setting the Stage
 The
German Kaiser has surrendered. The
Great War is over after years of war and
death. Much of the land is devastated and
billions have been spent. The victorious
members meet at the Palace of Versailles
to determine the treaty terms. Their
decisions at this meeting will have long
lasting implications for the future.

The Allies Response

Britain and France did not agree


The U.S. rejected the treaty
 They did not join the League of Nations which weakened the
organization
 Did not want to get dragged into another war
 America negotiated their own treaty with the Central Powers
 “European” war
Germany felt extreme bitterness with their treatment
 Especially the war guilt clause
 This anger would eventually lead to WWII
 Africa and Asia were upset that they did not get their independence
 The League of Nations fail - lacked real power and could not solve
world problems
