NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL AWARD WINNER Binham Priory, Binham. Access and Conservation Project Entrant - Mr D Frost Binham Priory was founded in 1091 and now consists of the Grade I Listed 12th Century Church of St Mary and the Holy Cross, the 15th Century Gatehouse and the ruins of the monastic precinct which are a Scheduled Ancient Monument. This multi-faceted project has involved: q Erecting an attractive flint and stone side extension housing new toilet/kitchen facilities and a striking new entrance porch. This addition has been built inside the remains of the buttresses of the former north aisle of the Church and has been designed in a contemporary ecclesiastical idiom under a zinc roof. q Carefully restoring the medieval gatehouse, including the removal of a modern agricultural building which had been inserted inside the structure. q Providing level access footpaths and interpretation panels around the site in compliance with the DDA. The paths have been surfaced in a bonded aggregate finish which replaced earlier broken concrete. Overall: The judges welcomed this major project as it has not only helped secure a more viable future for one of the most important heritage assets within North Norfolk, but it has also helped demonstrate that even the most sensitive of buildings can be adapted to meet 21st Century needs and aspirations.
