Dear Sir / Madam,
It is a great pleasure to invite your organization to participate in the International Telecommunication Union
(ITU) TRAI Training on “Leveraging ICTs for Smart Sustainable Cities”, which will take place in New Delhi
from 24-26 March 2015.
This Programme, organized jointly by the Telecommunication Development Bureau and the
Telecommunication Standardization Bureau of the ITU, and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, is
addressed to ICT stakeholders involved in policy and regulatory planning, and implementation of smart
sustainable cities (SSC). This training aims to build skills on how information and communication
technologies can be leveraged in efficient implementation of SSCs and the roles various stakeholders can
play. Please see Annex for further details.
Interested participants are invited to register using the registration form (Annex 2) by 15 February 2015 at
the latest. Please note that participants should make their own travel and accommodation arrangements.

disposal of the participants, who may need assistance.

DRAFT AGENDA
Brief Description:
Information and communication technologies are now leveraged by the entire society to improve the
quality of life and ensure sustainable development. Social, economic and environmental issues have
become tightly interconnected and there is rising application of these technologies in areas of health,
education, emergency, security, commerce to name a few. While it is estimated that cities contribute more
than 70 % of global greenhouse emissions and accountable for 60-80% of global energy consumption,
contributing to environmental degradation locally, regionally and globally, ICTs have an ability to provide
eco-friendly and economically viable solutions for cities, especially as their populations start to increase
rapidly.
In the “Smart and Sustainable” city models that are emerging, ICT stakeholders have a major role. While
facilitating development of the underlying broadband and intelligent machine to machine infrastructure,
they also play pivotal role in building smart and secure applications for the other sectors, create
appropriate enabling environment and provide tools for big data processing capabilities that can support
fast and efficient decision making. The ITU-T has a Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities, while a number
of initiatives are also being undertaken by Governments, Industry and International Organizations.
This training aims to build skills on the required framework for SSC from an ICT perspective, the underlying
components and the role of various ICT stakeholders in development of Smart Sustainable Cities.
