Liaison Psychiatry Team, Arrowe Park Hospital Barbara Woodworth, Clinical Service Manager We used the PLAN standards to see how well we were performing and identify gaps in our provision and realised that we wanted to make some improvements. So, we facilitated some additional training for team members – the PLAN project team made it clear to us from the start that the whole point of the process is to support improvement, rather than try to catch teams out, and so by increasing the training for staff, we were meeting these standards by the time we had our peer review. The peer review day itself was very busy as we are a large team offering a wide variety of liaison services and wanted to give a good account of all the services we provide! Hearing our acute trust colleagues tell the reviewers how valuable they find the liaison service was particularly rewarding. Feedback from service users was also really helpful and will result in changes to some of our working practices. The peer review picked up on some areas for improvement for us, such as reviewing our referral system and encouraging acute trust staff to engage in the initial assessment and management of patients. The review team discussed these ideas with us in a supportive way. We have taken these discussions on board and are now addressing them; as resources are being stretched in the current economic climate, ideas will be a helpful step forward. All in all the peer review day was hard work but very these worthwhile; the team were so uplifted by all the positive comments and proud of the service they offer. Visiting other services on their peer reviews was also helpful. We gained some ideas to develop in our own service, such as increasing service user and carer involvement, as well as improvements in recording assessments in a timely manner. Overall, we are very pleased to have received an ' excellent' accreditation. It has raised our profile in Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Trust and was widely communicated both in local media and within PCT, which has raised the spirits of the whole service and increased people’s interest in Liaison Psychiatry and the 'No Health without Mental Health’ agenda. The team were so uplifted by all the positive comments and proud of the service they offer.
