Dear Prospective Applicant: We welcome your interest in applying for admission to The American University School of Education's Teacher Education Program. Elementary education candidates must apply by March 15 of sophomore year. Secondary and K12 education candidates must apply by October 15 of junior year. Applicants who are past the deadline should consider the Education Studies Minor/MAT 5-year option. Prerequisites for admission include: • A cumulative grade point average of 2.70 or higher. Secondary applicants must also have at least a 3.0 in their major. • Completion of Schools and Society (EDU 205), Psychology of Education (EDU 420), Field Experience: Observation and Analysis (EDU 321), the College Writing requirement, and the Mathematics requirement. • A passing score (as set by the District of Columbia teacher licensing agency) on the PRAXIS CORE assessment in Reading, Writing and Math. When registering for the PRAXIS CORE, please send your scores to American University, code 5007. The application for admission includes: • Application for Admission to The American University Teacher Education Program o The application includes biographical data and two personal essays. Responses should be typed on the form. Hand-written applications will not be accepted. • Resume of your work, education, and relevant personal experiences. • Recommendations. You must have a recommendation from faculty for eachEDU courses you have taken. You must also have one recommendation from a faculty member outside of EDU. Provide each reference with an envelope addressed to the Teacher Education Office, Gray Hall Room 117 or references can be emailed to jboyd@american.edu. • A copy of your score on the Praxis CORE. Please submit these documents in one packet to the Teacher Education Advising Office in Gray 117. Recommendations can be sent separately. Once your application is complete, you will receive an email requesting an entrance interview. Entrance interviews will occur after the semester’s application deadline. After the entrance interview, SOE’s Teacher Education Committee will review your qualifications and notify you of its decision regarding admission.
