Abstract
Archives of the American Society for Nutrition (formerly known as the
American Institute of Nutrition or AIN and later the American Society
for Nutritional Sciences or ASNS ). The ASN is the premier research
society dedicated to improving the quality of life through the science of
nutrition. The Society fulfills its mission by: fostering and enhancing
research in animal and human nutrition; providing opportunities for
sharing, disseminating, and archiving peer-reviewed nutrition research
results (at its annual meeting and in its official publication, the Journal
of Nutrition): fostering quality education and training in nutrition;
upholding standards for ethical behavior in research, the protection of
human subjects, and the care and treatment of research animals; providing
opportunities for fellowship and support among nutritionists; and bringing
scientific knowledge to bear on nutrition issues through communication
and influence in the public domain.

American Society for Nutrition 155
Historical or Biographical Note
The world's first scientific society focused on nutrition was founded in 1928 by a group of illustrious
biochemists and physiologists in the United States. Each of the founders was a well known scientist
whose research was contributing toward the recognition of nutrition as a new specialty within the
biological sciences. Each was also actively engaged in teaching and in writing textbooks and reference
articles that were helping to define the newly emerging discipline.
Named the American Institute of Nutrition, the society's original purpose was to publish a journal
containing research reports in the newly emerging field of nutrition and its first members comprised the
editorial board for this journal. As the result of requests from prospective additional members, however,
the society was opened to other researchers in 1933 and held its first scientific meeting at the Cornell
Medical School in 1934. In 1941 it officially affiliated with the Federation of American Societies for
Experimental Biology.
The society, renamed the American Society for Nutritional Sciences in 1996, is the world's oldest
and foremost nutritional science society and its journal, The Journal of Nutrition, is the leader in its
category of scientific publications. Nutrition science has, itself, become diversified and the society now
encompasses the several specialties that have developed within the science.
In 2005, the ASNS merged with the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN) and the Society of
International Nutrition Research (SINR) to form the American Society for Nutrition
Collection Description
Records are divided into two chronological sub-groups based on identity of the organization. The first
and largest sub-group is identified according to the organization's original name, American Institute
of Nutrition, 1928-96. The second sub-group remains open and bears the organization's current title,
American Society for Nutritional Sciences, 1996-. Record Series in both sub-groups run parallel in
number and title. Folders are housed and numbered according to Record Series and without regard to Subgroup. The organization has had at least three honorary Archivists: Dr. Neige Todhunter, Dr. William J.
Darby and Patricia Swan, Ph.D.

Series 02: American Society for Nutritional Sciences
The society, renamed the American Society for Nutritional Sciences (ASNS) in 1996, is the world's
oldest and foremost nutritional science society and its journal, The Journal of Nutrition, is the leader in
its category of scientific publications. Nutrition science has, itself, become diversified and the society
now encompasses the several specialties that have developed within the science.
In 2005, the ASNS merged with the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN) and the Society of
International Nutrition Research (SINR) to form the American Society for Nutrition
