Minutes of the last meeting Minutes of the last meeting (11 Jan 12) were circulated and approved. 4. Membership of the Centre Members agree that we need strategically to bring in to people who are from different backgrounds and disciplines. A few names were put forward: Alice Brooke (History Dept, Latin American studies); Fabienne Viala (Hispanic Studies, f.viala@warwick.ac.uk); Ashok Malhotra (BA postdoctoral fellow in English, A.P.Malhotra@warwick.ac.uk) and Tara Puri (IAS Global research fellow, based in English). Action: AG will contact them to invite them for an upcoming Centre activity. 5. Events a. Upcoming events in the calendar The Centre has a full programme of events for the Autumn and Spring terms. In addition of this busy schedule, we have one workshop planned at the V&A and a final conference in December of the ‘Global Commodities’ project; the Venice conference of the ‘Trading Eurasia’ project; and several events associated with our IAS Visiting Fellow, Prasenjit Duara (and Dana Leibsohn in the summer term). b. Summer term workshops: Centre AGM is set in May with a public lecture by Emeritus Prof David Arnold. Possible events include a lecture associated with Dan Branch’s ‘Empire Loyalists’ project; and a workshop on ‘Companies’ (Chris Nierstrasz speaker). Further ideas and suggestions are welcome. 6. Longer-term plans We need to think about further long-term funding for the Centre (ongoing); To continuously raise the Centre’s visibility, suggestions included: I. Regular annual 2-day conference on relevant and generic theme, with around 80-100 people, outside of term, financially supported mainly in part by research grants, and in part by registration fees; II. Establish an annual broad theme, to invite people as speakers or panels from further afield and different disciplines to broaden the research topic and area; III. Consider organising the Centre’s own ‘distinguished lecture series’ (suggestions of names are welcome): IV. Consider publications, such as book series and publications of conference/workshop papers; publishers as Palgrave, Ashgate may be considered; V. Organise Summer Schools, to combine with University funding; VI. Planning ahead for IAS Visiting Fellowship for 2013-14, potential candidate - Deidre Coleman (Melbourne). 7. GHCC fund a. Applications Centre should focus on supporting members’ research activities, conference attendance and creating network etc. b. Deadlines There are two deadlines for current academic year, 15 Oct and 1 Feb, which are open to all Warwick staff and postgrads. It’s been suggested to add a Dec deadline round for Centre members only, for collaborating with interdisciplinary colleagues or external scholars etc. 8. Date of next meeting 4pm, 16 January 2013. 9. AOB Having recently attended the conference on New Direction in Global History, organised by The Oxford Centre for Global History, Maxine suggests we invite I. Prof Nicholas Purcell (Oxford), Jan de Vries (Berkeley) as speakers for next year; II. Consider a joint event with the Oxford Centre for Global History for next year.
