Minutes Europe’s Asian Centuries Project Meeting 22nd September 2011
1. On administrator appointment
Candidates for the position as project administrators have been short listed. The
earliest the new person will be in place is in November. Tim Davies will be temping
for two weeks, this might be extended.
We also discussed what we could ask Tim to do for us during the time he is working
for the project; Hanna suggested Tim might help scanning (and making available
online) literature for the “World of Consumption” course.
2. Anna Guszcza
A Farwell card for Anna was passed around
3. Today’s workshop
A discussion of the plan with today’s workshop; to discuss different ways to work in
a project, and experiences from working ERC project.
4. Trudy Hiller, Learning and Teaching
Visit by Trudy Hillier who informed us about the Team Work afternoon on the 4th of
October, 12.30-16.30, Room 3, Research Exchange Library Building (lunch will be
provided). An email will be sent to the participants with link to an online
questionnaire that the participants will fill in before the workshop. The objective
with the workshop is to identify key characteristics that contribute to successful
teamwork, roles played by different members of the project, strengths and potential
areas for development.
5. Postdoctoral development: presentation skills (previously point 11)
With Trudy Hillier also present we discuss the possibilities to organise a workshop on
presentation skills for post docs. This could either be organised on the initiative of a
group of a minimum of 6 post docs or by enlisting on an event already scheduled by
the Learning and Teaching Unit. It was agreed that we are going to ask Stephen
McDowall, Kate Smith and Bronwen Everill if they want to join up to organise our
own event. It was suggested we would suggest two days when we can meet and
then ask Sharon Neel to organise it for us.
6. Monthly reporting system and formal meeting
Starting this term the post doc will write monthly reports to Maxine Berg on what
they have been working on. We will also organise monthly project meetings on
Wednesdays. We also discussed the possibility of organising more informal project
seminars where we will present our research in conjunction with the monthly
meetings (e.g. Felicia’s paper from Graz, Chris’ book and Hanna’s Swedish Research
Project).
We also talked about inviting Dr Ghulam Nadri to come and talk to us (while he is a
fellow at LSE).
Tim will identify which Wednesday afternoons that we are free to meet up on.
It was suggested we should stick up the Monthly reports on the intranet, where
some of the Post doc’s Term reports are already available.

Maxine underlined that we are expected to turn up for the Global History Seminars.
There are also the Departmental Seminars (three this term: on the 19 and 26 of
October and 2nd of November) and the History of Medicine and the 18th century
Seminar
Tim offered to put together a list of this term’s events.
A Wall Calendar will also be in place in our new meeting room.
A discussion on how we could use our new meeting room; we are allowed to use it
for student meetings and tuitions, but it is not to become general meeting place
open to everyone. It will be furnished with a fridge, microwave and kettle.
