Notes from Reinvention Centre Film meeting 5th October 06
Present: Katy, Sarah, Laura, Elisabeth, Mike, Cath
The film will be called: Academic Work? Learning to Labour in Higher
Education
The film will explore the relationship between HE and work by asking: is the main
function of a higher education to provide workers for the economy? (and at the same
time … what are the implications of this? Is there resistance to this idea? Has it
always been like this?).
The tone of the film will be dark and serious rather than funny (and serious).
We aim to have the research and filming all ready by the end of week 10 this term, so
that the production and editing can be done over the Christmas vacation and the film
be ready sometime early in the spring term.
Mike is working on a script and a storyboard.
The following jobs need doing – some already have volunteers:
ARCHIVE RESEARCH looking for images we can use for the film (ie. no
copyright problems):

Images of contemporary work of all kinds for the opening of the film, which
will be speeded up as the narrative goes over the top. These should be
international images – ie. as wide a range of representations of contemporary
work as possible.

Historical/old images of schooling and historical images of work.

Images of Universities (historical and contemporary) – students learning, etc.

Footage of the Paris 1968 student protests?

Images/footage of any other student protest activity.
Doing this research will involve library based work.
Start with the Modern Records Section behind the Warwick library – say what we are
doing and what we are looking for. They are very helpful and can also help on
copyright issues.
Martin Wolf (Social Studies Librarian) in the main library is also worth getting in
touch with for assistance – he is really helpful.
Research visits will be necessary to: the British Library in London, and tracking down
other libraries – public and University - with relevant archive material.
No volunteers as yet for this job.
Interviews to be carried out and filmed:
Polly Toynbee – 27th October (Kay and Elisabeth to interview, Marcus to film and
Sophie to assist/direct) (London)
Bill Rammel – 25th October (Warwick).
Possibilities still outstanding/waiting for response: Digby Jones, John Hutton.
VOX POPS of students at universities - Sarah and Laura
(Warwick, Oxford Brookes, Coventry ….)
Guy from/in Germany (Mike meeting this week – details to follow)
Academics (not yet confirmed):
Tony Elgar (Katy to talk to him)
Paul Willis (Sarah to contact).
Female academic – Joyce Canaan at UCE event?
SRHE top up fees debate, UCE 31st October (Cath to contact them).
Activists at Social Centre – Sat 21st October (Sarah)
French Film Activist (Marcus) (Paris)
UNESCO rep (Paris)
All these interviews need someone to ask questions, someone to film and someone to
help out/direct the scene.
ALL EXPENSES WILL BE PAID
Other things:
Mary from Roehampton University is doing Marxist Chinese jazz funk music for
soundtrack.
Any one with musical inclinations to help out with soundtrack?
Anything else I have forgotten?
Next meeting next Friday 13th October in Learning Grid room B, 12-2 pm.
PLEASE be there for at least some of it, if you possibly can.
Cath.
