Michigan Technological University Department of Chemistry Laboratory Standard Operating Procedure Name of Procedure: Use of the base bath for cleaning glassware Lab Room Number: 713 CSE Date Prepared: June 4, 2008 This procedure requires prior approval from the laboratory supervisor or chemical hygiene safety officer. Yes / NO HAZARDS: The following materials and equipment associated with this procedure present exposure or physical health hazards. The base bath contains a saturated solution of KOH in EtOH/H20. This solution is quite caustic and is hazardous to unprotected skin and especially eyes. ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Prior to performing this procedure, the following safety equipment must be accessible and ready for use: None. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE CONTROLS: Prior to performing this procedure, the following personal protective equipment must be used. (Add specific instructions) Use of the base bath requires the wearing of chemical splash goggles. Neoprene/Latex (Playtex #834 or equivalent) gloves should be used at all time. ACCIDENTAL SPILL: In the event that a hazardous material spills during this procedure, execute the following emergency procedure. Wearing gloves and glasses as prescribed above, sponge up the spill and collect in a polyethylene container. Dilute, neutralize with dilute acid and sewer.
