VERNONIA
Species:
Douglas fir
Breeding Zones:
2
Original program had only one breeding zone.
Test data has separated the southwest
Sunday Creek area from the remainder.
Initiated:
1966
Crown Zellerbach made the first 309 parent-tree selections and cone collections in
Oregon State Forestry Department and Longview Fibre joined the program in
1966.
1967, and each collected from 300 parents in 1968.
International Paper bec_ame a
member in late 1968 -- too late for cone collection.
Stimson Lumber joined the program in the Sunday Creek Zone in 1980.
Bureau of Land
Management and Publishers Paper became members in 1981 with lands in the southeast.

Sowings for the original .program were made in the bare-root IFA
Canby Nursery in 1967 (309 CZ parents) and 1969. (300 OSFD, 300 LF parents ) .
Fifteen-year measurements were taken on. he C Z families i n 1981, and they are
scheduled for OSFD and LF families in t
fall of 1983.

are being used to upgrade the seed orchards.
Stimson Lumber has established a progeny test for Sunday Creek with 4 plantations
from a 1981 sowing. Bureau of Land Management and Publishers Paper plan to sow in 1984 for the southeast
area, which had little coverage in the original program.
Seed Orchards:
Two seedling seed orchard blocks were started in 1974 from single
pair matings of the original 909 parents made in 1971, 1973, and 1974.
CZ has a

Seed Orchard near St. Paul. 39 bushels in 1982. This block produced 11 bushels of cones in 1980 and
Stimson has been included with OSFD in a Sunday Creek block at Schroeder.
BLM has
plans for an independent orchard, and Publishers Paper will be provided room at the
Schroeder Orchard.

Progeny Testing:

of 1971.
Ten-year measurements were taken after 1978 growing season, and 15-year
will be due in the fall of 1983.
Genetic variation is shown to be large both within and between local populations.
Faster growing parents have been selected, crossed, and used to upgrade the several
seed orchards.
Seed Orchards:
Single-pair matings of parent trees between 1971 and 1974 resulted
in establishment of 2 seedling seed orchard blocks in 1976 -- one by CZ on 7 acres
at Eola Hills Seed Orchard, and the other on a 14-acre block at Ed Schroeder Seed
Orchard for the other 3 cooperators.
First production for latter was 20 bushels of
c-0nes in 1980, with a minor crop of 9 bushels in 1982.
Clone Banks:
Grafting on potted stock was done in the spring of 1981 for 2 clone
banks of about 120 superior parent trees.
CZ grafted at Wilsonville for their
clone bank, and IFA grafted at Nisqually for a clone bank of 6 acres established
in 1982 al: the Ed· Schroeder Seed· Orchard.
