Introduction
The main aim of this booklet is to exemplify standards for those teaching Cambridge O Level Art & Design
(syllabus 6090) to show how different levels of candidates’ performance relate to the subject’s assessment objectives (AOs).
Cambridge O Level Art & Design comprises three components. In this booklet a range of candidate responses for Component/Paper 1 have been chosen to exemplify achievement levels given in the syllabus assessment criteria, e.g. adequate, satisfactory, competent and so on. Separate Example Candidate
Responses booklets are available for Components 2 and 3.
On the following pages, the questions and assessment criteria are followed by candidate examples. For each candidate the main piece and supporting studies are shown, followed by the marks awarded and an examiner comment on performance. Comments are given to indicate where and why marks were awarded, and how additional marks could have been obtained. In this way, it is possible to understand what candidates have done to gain their marks and what they still have to do to improve their grades.
P ast papers, examiner reports and other teacher support materials are available on Teacher Support at http://teachers.cie.org.uk

Paper 1 – Observational assignment
This component is compulsory for all candidates; this is an externally set assignment which is marked by
Cambridge. This component gives the candidate the opportunity to explore any of the areas of study in response to the selected questions and demonstrate observational recording skills.
There are two parts to this component: the supporting studies and the examination piece produced in the controlled test. Cambridge will assess both parts together and award a single holistic mark out of 100.
In addition to the examination piece for Paper 1, supporting studies should be submitted. During the preparatory period, candidates are required to produce their supporting studies in response to one question.
They must bring this work to the start of the controlled six-hour test, and these supporting studies must then remain with the controlled test work under secure conditions. Candidates should refer to the supporting studies during the examination. Candidates cannot submit supporting studies after the start of the fi rst session and they should not produce additional supporting studies during the controlled test.
Supporting studies must be submitted for external assessment together with the fi nal examination piece.
Teachers may hand out the question paper upon receipt. There is no limit on the amount of preparatory time that candidates may have in order to prepare for the controlled test. However, teachers must be aware that candidates should receive both the question papers at the same time and must have at least two weeks to produce their supporting studies.
The questions act as starting points for the candidate’s focus of study, and all questions are broad and fl exible. Candidates should support the examination piece with investigation, research, evaluation and development. The examination piece may be produced in any two- or three- dimensional medium or combination of media, including printmaking, textiles, lens-based media and digital technology.
Candidates may seek initial guidance regarding the selection of question and appropriate choice of materials and processes at the start of the preparatory period from their teacher. The candidate is advised to research and investigate ideas from fi rst-hand studies of primary sources.

Technical skills and aesthetic understanding are at the very highest level. The subject has been explored using a range of media and different arrangements, all executed to a consistent highly accomplished standard. Of particular interest is the last supporting sheet documenting the exploration of different compositional arrangements through small sketches and photographs.

This is a small and detailed pen and ink composition developed from fi rst hand research in the candidate’s locality. The additional work of another artist has been well analysed and their stylistic infl uence can be seen in the candidate’s own work.
A little more in-depth investigation and exploration would have secured marks in the excellent range in all assessment domains.

The fi nal composition has been developed using a photographic collage technique. All the images are from the candidate’s own fi rst-hand research, and this aspect of the submission has reached an excellent standard.
However the process of collaging the individual images into a successful composition is much weaker, both in the overall design and in the technical skills. This has reduced the submission overall to very good.

The fi nal painting adopts an unusual format; a triptych and is the weakest part of the submission. The forms are very fl at with little tonal contrast or sense of light and shadow, and the three panels do not really visually relate.
In the supporting studies, howerver, other domains have been met to a good or profi cient level, with some very good photographs submitted as evidence of fi rst-hand research.

This is an example of how research into the candidate’s local environment has been developed into a competent painting. The supporting studies into the work of others has informed their own development and the analysis and critical evaluation is good.

This is an example of a competent level of achievement. The main weakness is in AO2 where exploration tends to be copies of the candidate’s photographs. However the range of drawing media and attention to detail and texture is refl ected in higher marks in AO4. This submission also shows how reference to the work of other artists is relevant to the development of the candidate’s own response.

The subject has been explored in some detail, demonstrating some competence in recording from direct observation. Exploration and development is mostly confi ned to copies of the photographs in different media. The addition of notes indicates some competence in personal evaluation and critical thinking.
The fi nal drawing manages to render the form of the packets in a convincing manner, with the biscuits lying within their packets. There could have been more emphasis given to tonal contrasts.

This is an example of an adequate achievement level. There is evidence of fi rst-hand observation, with photographs of the pose taken from different angles and viewpoints. It is a pity that so many of the drawings do not directly relate to the pose.
The strength is in the fi nal outcome which manages to capture the form of the head looking down particularly well and also the foreshortening due to the high viewpoint .

An adequate standard has been reached in the investigation and the organisation of visual elements to create a fi nal composition.
Weaknesses can be seen in the lack of a range of exploration of alternative ideas, arrangements or viewpoints, and in the lack of experimentation with materials and processes.

This is an example of a straightforward still-life approach. The candidate has attempted to record from direct observation using their own photography and drawings. There is some evidence of exploration, but this is confi ned to individual studies using different media. Little consideration has gone into exploring different arrangements or alternative viewpoints.
The fi nal work shows some evidence of analysis of form and structure, particularly in the detail of the pineapple. Any sense of space created by overlapping the fruits is lost by a lack of tonal contrast and cast shadows, however.
