NASA Quarterly UVIS Q4 - 2011 (Aug - Oct 2011) Quarterly 1 <date> UVIS: Science Highlight On 19 October 2011 the Cassini UVIS will observe two of the three stars in Orion’s belt as they pass behind Enceladus’ water vapor plume. The path of the stars will cross the plume horizontally, with the closer of the two at an altitude of ~18 km from Enceladus’ limb and the other at ~39 km. This geometry gives us the opportunity to determine the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the jets in Enceladus’ plume simultaneously. The structure of the jets is a key dataset that models of the eruptive activity internal to Enceladus, hidden to Cassini, must predict. This will be the 5th (and last) Enceladus plume occultation observed by Cassini. Two stellar occultations in 2005 established water as the dominant constituent, determined the source rate, and constrained the plume’s latitudinal extent. A stellar occultation in 2007 detected supersonic gas jets that appear to correlate with the dust jets observed in images. A solar occultation in 2010 put upper limits on the amount of N 2 in the plume and yielded the best structure of the jets to-date.
