UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Enterprise and Promotions Manager UCL Department: Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) Salary: £33,686 - £40,716 per annum (pay award pending) Grade: 7 Post type: Full-time (A fractional appointment or job-share would be considered.) Reports to: Prof Peter Sammonds, IRDR Director Availability: The post is available for a period of one year in the first instance. The position is full-time, but a fractional appointment or job share would also be considered. Summary of the Post The UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) is a cross-UCL Institute, launched as a Provost’s strategic development in 2010, which aims to lead research, knowledge exchange, enterprise and advanced teaching in the area of risk and disaster reduction (RDR). By providing a focus for UCL’s RDR activities, with its breadth of disciplinary emphasis, promotion of novel multidisciplinary research and translation into practice, the Institute aims to assume a role of leadership in RDR both in the UK and internationally. The Institute is hosted in the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, but operates across all UCL’s faculties, spanning earth and space sciences, statistics, engineering and global health and contributes to UCL’s Grand Challenges. The IRDR has 3 core staff, 7 academic staff, 12 visiting staff, 9 research staff and runs three masters programmes, an MRes and two MSc with about 25 students, and has a research student population of over 20. We are seeking to appoint an Enterprise and Promotions Manager to work in the IRDR, developing Enterprise and professional training initiatives and promoting the IRDR’s activities through public events, publicity and the media, mapping onto new UCL and MAPS Faculty priorities. The multidisciplinary nature of risk to disasters overlaps with a range of industry sectors including, insurance and finance, the built and natural environment and space. This creates multidimensional opportunities that places the IRDR as a hub for UCL in providing research, consultancy, advice and training, to both commercial and social enterprise. We have partnered business and humanitarian agencies, undertaken consultancy for private and public sectors organisations in the UK and internationally, and participated in training and continuing professional development. The position would be held in the IRDR and is full-time, but a fractional appointment or job share would also be considered. The post may require international travel and working out of “office hours” for promotional events. Flexible working can be organised. Function of the Post: The post-holder will develop a structured approach to enterprise, business liaison and CPD provision for the IRDR, as well as promotion of IRDR activities, through undertaking the following tasks: 1. Seek out and catalogue the needs of the commercial, NGO, and public sectors for fundamental and applied risk analysis research and practice that maps onto the profiles of academics and researchers across UCL, covering mathematics, statistics, natural hazards, population health, environment, catastrophic engineering risks, financial risks and resilience. 2. Liaise with external commercial and social enterprise, in collaboration with UCL Corporate Partnerships and BEAMS School Enterprise Office, with the aim of building long-term commercial and social enterprise partnerships in the area of risk and disaster reduction. 3. Act as a broker for delivery of high quality consultancy in the area of risk and disaster reduction across UCL to financial institutions, legal firms, brokerages and consultants; and manage the development of the consultancy portfolio. 4. Develop a framework for a programme of continuing professional development courses in risk and disaster reduction, particularly for the international audience, as part of UCL’s commitment to Lifelong Learning • Coordinate, solicit and manage contributions to this programme from IRDR staff and external contributors • Develop and contribute some of the programme content 5. Develop a framework for MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) in risk and disaster reduction as part of UCL’s new commitment to MOOCs. • Coordinate, solicit and manage contributions to these courses from IRDR staff and external contributors • Develop and contribute some of the MOOC content 6. Promote IRDR research, consultancy, and teaching through publicity, website, events and the media 7. Compile budgets and costings for courses, consultancy, enterprise partnerships and promotional events and activities that UCL IRDR produces and undertakes Other duties and responsibilities: 1.
