COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Examines artificial and natural lighting in interior design. Considers
environmental comfort, effects on colors, and information required for selection of
lamps and fixtures. Acquaints student with the basic calculation methods as they
relate to the lighting design process.
Prerequisite: IND 101 with grades of “C” or better

METHODS OF PRESENTATION:
Lecture, demonstration, field trips, critiques.
STUDENT OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should:
1. Review the factors involved in lighting design including: light sources,
their applications, quantities, and color effects.
2. View the use of natural and artificial light in interior design.

3. Draw reflected ceiling plans which work within the projects guidelines
and meet the clients needs and provide

4. Utilize good hand-drafting or computer drafting and lettering skills to
accurately produce the reflected ceiling plans and other drawings
required in the classroom.
5. Identify lamps and fixtures, which are suitable to solve a design
problem.
6. Design reflected ceiling plans for residential and commercial spaces.
7. Balance the information needed in your reflected ceiling plan on the
page including
a. key of fixtures (luminaries)
b. dimensioning
c. notes

8. Make a print of the reflected ceiling plan.
9. Identify the different colorations of lamps and the concepts of Kelvin
temperature and CRI.
10. Compare the appearance of colored items under different light
sources.
11. Classify the type of lighting products required to provide light for

12. Understand what information is required to calculate the amount of
light required for a space.

METHODS OF EVALUATION:
Successful completion of assigned reflected ceiling project and lighting
calculation project. Testing of vocabulary and technical information.
