Expansive Core course in place of a free elective.
Students placed in Honors English may skip ENGL
1010. Upon completion of ENGL 1023H and
2011H with a C or better, they will receive credit

_____________
**More or less free elective credit may be needed,
depending on the minor and the Physical Science
course chosen.
Biology:
• Xavier Biology students must take the required Biology courses at Xavier.
• Biology electives can be taken elsewhere if approved in advance.
• Students who earn a D in a Biology elective can either repeat the same course for a higher grade, or take a
different Biology elective and use the D credit as a free elective.
Minor: Biology B.A. students can minor in any subject, or with approval, use a double concentration as a
minor. Refer to the catalog for minor requirements. A minor requires 18 hours. A double concentration
requires 12 hours in each subject. Students minoring in Chemistry will need to take 7 hours of chemistry in
addition to the 11 hours required for the Biology B.A. major. These students will need to take extra free
elective credits sufficient to total 125 hours for the degree.
Philosophy:
• PHIL 1030 and 1070 are Introductory.
• PHIL 2011, 2021, 2031, 2040, and 2045 may be used as either Introductory or Upper Level.
• All other 2000-level and higher PHIL courses are Upper Level.
Expansive Core: Students are required to take two Expansive Core courses from two of the four categories.
• Biology B.A. students who use Astronomy (PHYS 1010) or an Integrated Physical Science (IPSC) course for
their Physical Science can use that course as one expansive core, and select a second from a category
other than Natural Science.
• Students who use General Physics (PHYS 2010) for the Physical Science requirement will need to select
two Expansive Core courses from different categories. The second Expansive Core course can take the
place of a free elective.
Honors in English: Students who take the Honors Track (ENGL 1023H and 2011H) will receive credit for ENGL
1010 after completing the Honors classes with a C or better. Those credits complete the core requirements in
English. To graduate with Honors in English, a 3000- or 4000-level course is also required (see catalog for details).
Students who opt for Honors in English may wish to select an upper level Expansive Core course in English to
complete their Honors English sequence and also complete the Expansive Core.
Free Electives: Except as noted below, one 3-credit free elective is needed to reach the 125 hours required for
the degree.
• Students who use General Physics for the Physical Science requirement will take a second Expansive Core
course in place of the free elective.
• Students who minor in Chemistry (or another minor subject for which some coursework is already required
in the curriculum) will need additional free electives to total 125 hours.
Updated November 2015
This revised curriculum was approved by the academic council 3 November 2015, and supercedes
the curriculum printed in the 2014-2016 catalog for students admitted beginning Fall 2012.
