Rapidways are dedicated lanes in the centre of the road that allow Viva vehicles to avoid traffic congestion and provide a truly rapid transit service. The project also includes urban boulevards with wider sidewalks, plantings and street furniture. As Newmarket continues to grow, these improvements will help shape urban renewal of this vital corridor with attractive, pedestrian-friendly places for people to live, work, shop and play. Last year we made significant progress on pre-construction work along Davis Drive, including soil testing, archaeological studies, building demolitions and recycling of materials. This year, work continues with utility relocations, building retaining walls and beginning the reconstruction of the Keith Bridge (by the Tannery Mall). Road construction of the Davis Drive rapidway – from Yonge Street to Roxborough Road – is scheduled to begin in fall 2011, and be completed in 2014. Work on the Yonge Street rapidway link will start in 2014, with an anticipated completion date of 2017. Talk to us at vivanext.com/blog. vivanext.com Demolition work almost completed In Spring 2010, demolition crews began the job of removing 21 buildings to prepare Davis Drive for wider sidewalks, planting along the boulevard and widening of the roadway for vivaNext rapidway. Demolition and clean-up is expected to wrap up by February 2011. VivaNext is proud of the fact that at least 85% of the materials from these buildings were recovered, recycled and diverted from landfill sites. Items such as lumber, countertops, cupboards, and yes – even the kitchen sinks, were retrieved and resold by Habitat for Humanity York Region at their ReStore locations in Newmarket and Vaughan. Even some shrubs, plants and trees from demolition sites were transplanted to new locations within Newmarket, including some churches and Maple Leaf Public School. Keith Bridge reconstruction is underway Reconstruction of the Keith Bridge has begun. This work will take place in two stages – first on the south side and then on the north side. Work currently taking place on the south side will be completed in late 2011, and work on the north side will follow. We expect all work to widen the bridge will be completed by 2014. It has been beautifully designed to reflect Newmarket’s rich architectural heritage – from the railings to the light fixtures to the stonework. Throughout the reconstruction some temporary lane closures may The Old Davis Tannery be needed, but we’ll try our N best to keep traffic moving, especially during rush hours. Trail Detour Keith Bridge Trail Detour Davis Drive Construction Area Seniors’ Meeting Place way to go. way to grow. From November 2010 to December 2011, a detour is in effect along the Tom Taylor Trail at the point where it normally passes under the Keith Bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists using the trail should follow clearly-marked detour signs to Davis Drive and use the traffic lights to cross the street before picking up the trail again on the other side.
