Mary E. Slaughter slaughter@rand.org EDUCATION Case Western Reserve University Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division: Epidemiology M.S. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division: Biostatistics University of Maryland, College Park B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology, Genetics Expected Completion, Summer 2016 May 2006 Aug. 1999 EXPERIENCE RAND Corporation, Pittsburgh, PA Dec. 2007 – Present Statistical Project Associate III My primary responsibilities are to provide statistical and analytical support to research projects in health, labor and population, and education. Large projects include: ♦ A study examining neighborhood factors such as foreclosure rates, age composition, income and racial segregation and how they relate to cognition among the elderly using data from the Health and Retirement Study ♦ Women’s Health Initiatives Project with primary aim to understand how environmental and neighborhood factors interplay with various health outcomes and health risk behaviors ♦ Determine causal effects of treatment services on adolescent drug use and other outcomes using causal modeling techniques that study concurrent effects of treatment, cumulative effects of multiple treatment episodes, and differential effects of subgroups ♦ A randomized control study comparing a standard geometry and algebra curriculum with a computer based, individualized program. Main goal is to determine whether the new curriculum significantly improves math learning relative to the standard curriculum and if it influences student confidence, attitudes and career plans ♦ A study examining the medical cost profile and quality of care for patients and determining which level (physician, practice, group, or network) is most appropriate for profiling ♦ Analyzing survey data about beneficiaries' experiences with healthcare, and through analytic reports, guide decisionmakers on quality improvement efforts and aid consumers on choice of plans ♦ Examining the Math and Science Partnership of Southwest Pennsylvania, a partnership created to improve math and science instruction, student course taking, and student achievement ♦ Estimating the economic cost of drug abuse (marijuana and other illicit drugs), by constructing a micro-simulation model in R Department of Genetic Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH Project Manager / Specialist II My primary responsibilities fell under two general categories: Apr. 2001 – Aug. 2007 Analysis & Programming: ♦ Performed statistical analyses with research data using methods such as multivariate regression, robust ANOVA, principal components, clustering, and logistic regression ♦ Interpreted statistical analyses and participated in discussions of results with scientific collaborators ♦ Analyzed genetic epidemiological data to detect major genes associated with End Stage Renal Disease and Diabetic Nephropathy ♦ Utilized SAS and S.A.G.E. (Statistical Analysis for Genetic Epidemiology) software programs to perform segregation and linkage analysis on marker (microsatellite) and phenotypic data ♦ Organized and compiled data residing in popular database software for further statistical analyses ♦ Monitored data entry by detecting data inconsistencies and resolved those discrepancies ♦ Developed protocols to improve data integrity and computer modules to enhance quality control ♦ Contributed to writing grants and manuscripts Project Management & Training: M.E. Slaughter 1 of 4 ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Managed the Fuchs’ Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) Genetics Multi-center Study, an epidemiological study with primary goal to map novel genes for FECD Supervised all major study operations, particularly recruitment of participants from 28 sites across the U.S., construction of the study database, data entry, site reimbursement, publicity campaigns, IRB compliance, and transition of biological samples Created training materials, restructured and maintained a detailed manual of procedures, revised informed consent documents, and constructed periodic data summary reports Developed data collection forms, publicity materials, and SQL queries for enrollment reports Composed NIH progress reports and External Advisory Committee presentations Trained study coordinators across all 28 sites and directly supervised a 7 member team at the study center in Cleveland Performed staff evaluations and reviews Organized and led monthly investigator conference calls and bi-weekly core group focus meetings USDA Agricultural Research Service, Vegetable Lab, Beltsville, MD May 1999 – Apr. 2001 Biological Science Technician ♦ Performed plant DNA extractions, PCR, RAPD and AFLP techniques, agarose gel electrophoresis, phenolic and caroteniod extractions, HPLC, and plant tissue culture ♦ Trained student interns on laboratory procedures and use of experimental equipment ♦ Ordered and maintained laboratory supplies and tabulated experimental data into spreadsheets TEACHING EXPERIENCE Statistical Methods II- Teaching Assistant Spr. 2003 Course covered ANOVA, regression and analysis of quantitative data, experiment design, power of tests, and model adequacy. Responsible for grading weekly assignments, holding office hours, preparing answer keys, answering questions about lecture material and/or assignments.
