VivaNext is York Region’s next generation of rapid transit for a growing region, and rapidways – dedicated lanes for bus rapid transit – are part of the plan. Rapidways are being built in Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Newmarket, with funding from Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario working to transform regional transit expansion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. This spring we’re moving forward with rapidway construction on Davis Drive, with extensive work from Yonge Street to Huron Heights Drive. Hydro poles and other utilities are being relocated farther from the roadway, gas lines are being installed, and a culvert will be replaced near the hospital. Work will continue on the Keith Bridge near the Seniors’ Meeting Place, and some retaining walls will be built on the north side of the roadway. Later this year, the historic Union Hotel on the northeast corner of Davis Drive and Main Street will be relocated farther back from the roadway. Talk to us at vivanext.com/blog. Once complete in 2014, Davis Drive will have dedicated rapid transit lanes, attractive streetscaping and pedestrianfriendly places that will contribute to revitalizing and transforming this important corridor. You’ll see a lot of construction on Davis Drive this year, so be sure to sign up for updates at vivanext.com to find out about important detours and the latest construction information. The Union Hotel at 425 Davis Drive was built soon after and remains an important part of Newmarket’s heritage. To allow Davis Drive to be widened for rapidways, the Union Hotel will be set back on the same property, to preserve it as a reflection of Newmarket’s rich history.
