Parkside Dr Wilstead Dr 130 Davis Drive shops Taking big steps toward the future Construction has been underway all summer and the continuing transformation of Davis Drive can be seen up and down the corridor. Retaining walls have been built, many hydro poles and other utilities have been moved back, and watermains, storm sewers and other services are also being relocated to make room for the widening of the roadway. We recognize that bringing this plan to life hasn’t been without its challenges and we thank you for your patience throughout this project. We are working hard to minimize disruption and complete the project as quickly as possible. Retaining walls Hydro poles Widening Davis Drive means moving sidewalks and boulevards back to make room for the rapidway lanes. In locations along Davis Drive where the ground slopes toward the road, retaining walls are needed so that utilities can be moved. Ten retaining walls have been built using stone blocks or textured concrete. Seven more walls are planned to be completed before the spring next year. These will set the stage for the road widening. Many of the new hydro poles have been installed farther back from the roadway. To reduce the visual impact and contribute to an inviting streetscape, the pole design has an attractive black finish, does not require supportive wires and incorporates the streetlights. A look ahead at rapidway construction on Davis Drive Before the spring of 2013, the historic Union Hotel on the northeast corner of Davis Drive and Main Street will be moved back on its current site, the culvert where Eastern Creek crosses Davis Drive near the Southlake Talk to us at vivanext.com/blog. Regional Health Centre will be replaced and extended, and traffic will shift to the new south side of Keith Bridge while the north side of the bridge is demolished and re-built to accommodate the wider roadway. Having built most of the retaining walls, installed some of the new hydro poles and completed other key components, 2013 will focus on completing the relocation of utilities and telecommunications, roadway construction and building the new vivastations. Once construction is complete, Davis Drive will be a lovely, fresh pedestrian-friendly place with dedicated rapid transit lanes and an attractive streetscape. Union Hotel Built in 1881, the Union Hotel is one of Newmarket’s distinctive heritage buildings. The two-storey brick structure was designed by local architect John Ough and still has many of its original features, including mouldings, staircases and woodwork. The Union Hotel will be lifted up and moved back on its current site to preserve its reflection of Newmarket’s rich history. Keith Bridge A new structure for the south side of Keith Bridge has been built just east of the Tannery. This fall and into 2013, we’ll be working on the existing bridge structure on the north side. When that work begins, traffic will shift to the new south side of the bridge. The Tom Taylor Trail will continue to be detoured where it meets Davis Drive for the duration of the bridge construction. When finished in 2014, the trail will re-open underneath Keith Bridge which will include historical architectural features, wider sidewalks and dedicated rapidway lanes. The north side of the culvert will be completed by the end of the year and the south will be done in 2013. While this work, followed by the culvert construction, is taking place, traffic will be reduced to one lane in either direction with an emergency lane in the middle. When travelling through this area, be aware of pedestrians and other vehicles as you follow directional signs and shifted lane markings. Your safety is impor tant to us During construction, crossing at designated crosswalks is more important than ever. Lane closures can change frequently and when areas are blocked off, drivers must slow down and pay close attention to signs and road markings so they can drive safely. While they’re watching the road, drivers might miss a pedestrian who is crossing or running into a non-pedestrian zone. way to go. way to grow. Even when crossing at a designated crosswalk, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Be sure to look both ways. We encourage everyone to please put away phones, MP3 players or tablets and focus on the road. It helps to be constantly alert. Your safety is a top priority. We hope you will enjoy all that the vivaNext transformation has to offer once it’s complete.
