Dear IP Man:
It seems fisheye and multi-imager cameras
keep growing in popularity. What, if anything,
is the difference between the two and what are
the best applications for each?
- Fish Out of Water
Dear Fish:
First, I think it is important to distinguish
between the two. A fisheye camera is a single
imager camera, used in conjunction with a
fisheye lens, achieving a very wide or even
panoramic field of view. These cameras are
good at coverage in a large area, though not as
good as getting high detail in that large area.
Parking lots are a good example. A fisheye can
provide an overall scene of the lot and what is
happening in it, but don’t expect to be able to
read license plates.
Multi-imager cameras are just what they
sounds like, multiple cameras cased into a
single enclosure, each with their own imager.
Together, you get a wide/panoramic field of
view, but you also get better detailed images
on account of the multiple imagers each
looking at a much smaller area. But that detail
comes with a price. Multi-imager cameras are
typically more expensive and require more
throughput on your network and more storage
on your recorder.
In both scenarios, I would recommend doing
some type of field of view/lens calculation and
trying to get an idea of pixel density. This will
serve as a rough guideline in determining what
level of quality you will get out of the camera.
