5.1a Draft List of Recommended Courses Already in the CR Catalog that May Qualify as Meeting the New Multicultural Understanding Requirement Multicultural and Diversity Committee April 4, 2014 The proposal for a new General Education Requirement Area E, Multicultural Understanding was passed by the Academic Senate on March 7, 2014. Before implementing this requirement, the next steps to be taken have been identified as: Develop criteria that will be used to determine if new or updated courses can meet this requirement; Determine what existing courses already satisfy the criteria for this requirement. The MDC has an opportunity to contribute to the discussion by identifying such criteria and/or identifying courses and making our recommendations to the Curriculum Committee. Below is a list of courses that may meet the requirement. The list is in two parts. First, courses extracted from HSU’s Diversity and Common Ground List, that are lower division and that appear to have a CR ‘equivalent’ are in the left hand column, with the proposed CR equivalent in the right hand column. The HSU requirement is twofold: students must take a class with a ‘domestic’ focus AND one with a ‘non-domestic’ focus. The second list is of CR courses that do not appear to have an HSU equivalent on the DCG list, but that may still satisfy the requirement. First task: Review the course listings below and determine their validity as Area E candidates. Second task: Review the attached DCG list from HSU and see if there are any courses that have CR equivalents that are not included below. Third task: Review the CR Catalog for other courses that may qualify for the list.
