College of the Redwoods CURRICULUM PROPOSAL DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSE Renewable every five years Date: 10/21/08 1. Division: Information Sciences 2. Course ID and Number: CIS 20 3. Course Title: Programming with Data Structures 4. Distance Education Method: Instructional TV on cable Interactive TV on videoconference Online 5. Describe in detail how this course will apply the same standards of course quality as a traditional classroom course (attach course outline and syllabus). This course currently makes extensive use of Blackboard; the Internet; and collaborative, asynchronous online tools such as Blackboard's discussion board component. These same tools will be used to offer an online course to deliver lectures, encourage collaboration, meet with students, distribute and collect projects and assignments, and deliver course assessments. I use a variety of strategies for delivering lectures. Typically I create a vignette on a topic that includes my explanation of a topic and a variety of web links that include a variety of explanations and different levels of detail (students can drill down to satisfy their curiosity . . . . or not). For more complex concepts I use Camtasia to create short videos where I demonstrate how to do a particular problem (e.g. calculate the PC value of a memory module, or calculate the subnet mask for a given IP network). I keep the videos fairly short (less than 10 minutes each) for two reasons: memory requirements and student attention span. A week's "lecture" may contain several of these videos in addition to the vignette I mentioned above. In addition, if a topic needs visual attention (e.g. linked list and pointer relationships), I use Camtasia and PowerPoint to create a narrated and annotated video as well. 6. Describe how this course will include regular effective contact between the instructor and students. Weekly discussion board collaboration will be a required component of the course. The instructor will hold virtual office hours using technology provided by CCConfer. Additionally, instructor initiated contact will consist of regular emails to students outlining required participation and deliverables. 7. Describe how standard methods of assessment will be adapted to the distance education format. Assessments will be delivered via Blackboard's exam delivery component. Submitted by: Dan Calderwood Tel.
