DISTANCE LEARNING CLASSES
Courses already approved by the Curriculum Committee require an additional review and
approval in order to be taught as distance learning classes, defined as classes in which the
instructor and student are separated by distance and interact through the assistance of
communication technology (Title 5, 55370). The purpose of this separate review and approval is
to ensure that classes taught by means of distance learning have the same quality, rigor and
intensity as other classes. In order to encourage experimentation and accommodate limited
timelines, classes may be taught once by means of distance learning before being approved by
the Curriculum Committee. The Committee, however, must be informed before the course is
scheduled.

Please specify what communication technologies will be used for this class and how:
Instructor will use Macromedia Dreamweaver MX to design and manage interactive Web
site for BUS 8T, Table Formatting, which will be available on the College of the Redwoods,
Del Node, Web site. Students will have access to Course Syllabus, Weekly Lecture Notes,
Weekly Assignments, Interactive Quizzes, and instructor email. Technical questions
regarding the keyboarding software will be addressed by textbook publisher technical
support, McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. (This I-unit online class is modeled after a
keyboarding course offered by Diablo Community College.)

Note: Instructors of transfer level classes must meet with the class in person on some
regular basis. Instructors of other classes must simply maintain regular contact.

What forms of supplementary communication will be used and to what extent (e.g.,
telephone, e-mail, regular mail, computer bulletin board, newsletters)?
Instructor will be in direct contact with students on a weekly basis through email and class
bulletin board. In addition, students have immediate access to instructor via telephone to her
office and home. On-campus appointments will be scheduled where necessary.

Please specify the reasons this course is appropriate for delivery by distance education:
Students will be working with Glencoe Keyboarding software, which is set up specifically
for Distance Education classes. This new Distance Education software version provides
students with an audio and visual introduction to the concepts they are learning. In addition,
students will be provided with weekly lecture notes—the same notes that are used to teach
the on-campus keyboarding class.
Students will complete online exams which will be created with ExamView Pro, electronic
testing software. Once the students have answered the exam questions, they click the Grade
& Submit button. The exam (containing the student’s responses) is sent directly to the
instructor’s office via email. Students receive immediate feedback containing their exam
scores along with an explanation why their responses are correct or incorrect.
(During Fall 2003 semester I took Keyboarding using this Glencoe keyboarding software
through Diablo Valley College and found it very challenging and unproblematic to complete
online.)

Please specify the changes that will be made in the delivery and conduct of the class in order
to maintain its quality:
Students will be using the Distance Ed version of the Glencoe keyboarding software. The
Distance Ed version of this keyboarding software is currently used to teach BUS 8T, Table
Formatting, on campus. The only difference between the classes will be in the manner of
delivery. Students at home will be required to ~ and read carefully the Weekly Lecture
Notes, and the Weekly Assignment Schedule, which will be available on the CRDN Web
site. The online keyboarding students will complete the same lessons and take the same
exams that will be required of the on-campus keyboarding class. Students online will take
their exams using an electronic testing software rather than a written paper exam. The
standards for the online class will be identical with those used for the on-campus class.
