Basic Skills: Engl 1a and Math 120 are required for the Child Development permit.
Students are encouraged to take placement tests in both. Students with developed
reading and writing skills have more success in ECE courses. The correlation
between math and ECE success is not clear cut, but students with higher-level math
have better critical thinking skills and course success.
PRC recommends noting that the online courses are picking up, but many students
taking only as “filler,” and are unprepared for the nature of the courses.
Student services advising could be better; this is currently being looked at.
