DESCRIPTION OF SELECTED TOPIC:
The description should clearly state the scope of the course, its level, and what student goals the course is designed
to fulfill.
An introductory-level course in the use of Quickbooks accounting software. The goal of
the course is to enable the student to use Quickbooks in real-life situations. This course
is particularly relevant for bookkeepers and small business owners who want to be able
to use Quickbooks to automate bookkeeping and accounting tasks.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: What should the students be able to do as a result of taking this course?
State some of the objectives in terms of specific, measurable student accomplishments.
Students will be able to use Quickbooks accounting software to:
• Set up the accounting system for a small business
• Perform bookkeeping and accounting tasks
• Control checking and savings accounts
• Run a payroll and produce payroll reports
• Send out invoices and receive payments
• Enter and pay bills (accounts payable)
• Configure and track inventory
• Manage files

What will the students be doing (i.e. listening to lectures, participating in discussions and/or group activities,

Classes will be lecture/demonstration. The instructor will lead hands-on demonstrations
while the students complete a series of exercises designed to teach the various
functions of the Quickbooks accounting software

Students will be given an assignment to set up and post transactions for a fictitious
small business. The grade for the course will be dependent upon this project and
satisfactory completion of the textbook exercises.

Bus 180 or Bus 1A or work experience in bookkeeping or accounting. Basic computer
skills.
Rationale for Recommended Preparation?
Students who have no experience with bookkeeping or accounting may find this course
difficult because they will need to learn bookkeeping and accounting procedures while
also learning to use the Quickbooks software. Since Quickbooks is a computer
application, students should have basic computer skills to take this class.
